The Red Wiggle Dress - Gertie's New Book For Better Sewing

This is my first version of the Wiggle Dress from Gertie's New Book for Better Sewing.

Pattern Review: The Red Wiggle Dress - Gertie's New Book For Better Sewing  

Pattern Description: from the book- "Here is a dress that's meant to show off your curves, yet you'll still be office appropriate  The sheath style, kimono sleeves, boat-neck front, and a V-neck back are all borrowed from a time when work attire was a lot more exiting than today.." I made this version to wear to our friend's wedding in Paris, so it was upgraded into a Joan Holloway.  I think Joan would actually easily wear this one to work too, maybe just for a good enough reason .. :)

Pattern Sizing: I am size 8 (bust)-10 (hips) in Gertie's chart (yes, and me like it)).
Actually the fact we have a similar body shape helped a lot, since the pattern almost did not require any fitting adjustments. I took off about half an inch length in the waist, and add a bit more ease in the belly area (midway between the waist and the hips).

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done with it? 

Yes it did. I was pretty amazed to try the dress for the first time, cause I haven't made a muslin. I guess the fact it's very fitted makes you see the shape right away. 

Were the instructions easy to follow? 

Yes, mostly. At first I got a bit stressed out since I only found some pattern pieces on a page. The usual story with me- missing the small print. Most of the patterns are printed out on a few sheets, and it says which in a little box on the garment page, under supplies. 
Other than that the instruction worked for me almost all the way through. I used Gertie's blog tutorial with for a more detailed gussets instructions (it has bigger pictures), but it was only since it was my first time doing that. I made the dress in the second version already and didn't even need the instructions anymore. 
I did a little change there- didn't feel the need to transfer the stitching lines to the right side, i just pined the organza there, just around the lines and stitched on the wrong sides (I think that's also Gertie's technique from the Starlet Suit Jacket course, she used on bound button holes)
One thing I really missed here were some instructions on the lining. I could not find any reference else where to making a lining for a dress with underarm gussets. Since I didn't believe you have to make the whole organza strip of fabric-gusset procedure again on the lining, I just left the sleeves unlined for this version. 

If anybody knows what to do with the lining in this case- please let me know:), I finished the second version and it's still unlined..

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? 

Well that's easy- I love the pattern, the fit is "mine", this is a classic Kimono sleeve, that can be used over and over in many variations.. Whats not to like? :) 

Fabric Used: Red wool crepe I brought back from Toronto. I had 2 yards, but it was enough, may be cause I'm a bit shorter than Gertie. I lined it with some satin quality and a bit stretchy fabric, that feels like rayon. The stretch makes the lining more comfortable to wear, and the satin feels pleasant against the skin.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: 
*** For this version I changed the neck line into a scoop neck, for a more evening look. This was easy (I just followed the new line of the front bodice neckline to draw the new facing. BUT (And Gertie talks about that in the book) if you do that- be sure to STABILIZE the neckline seam with some good organza stripes or a ready made stabilizer.  It is not enough just to make a stabilizing row of stitching  I did that and had to fight the gaping quiet a lot later. With my second version (soon to be posted) I did follow the more strict instructions and it worked.

Would you sew it again? 
Hell yeah, already did. Post about it soon.

Would you recommend it to others? 
Yes definitely, if you like this style.

I have to say a few words about this lovely blogger, that I feel so grateful to. As strange as it sounds to me now, there was a time in my life when I was pursuing  this hobby of mine  ALL BY MY SELF, not aware of the the internet sewing community. My knowledge came mostly from reading old fashion books and collecting vintage patterns and sewing books (in any language I could put my hands on). I loved my interest but mostly felt a bit alone..:(

Stumbling across Gertie's blog was a big breakthrough for me. I was amazed to see another person so passionate about an interest similar to mine. She was smart and funny and feminist and talked about sewing with great enthusiasm and intention to detail. Through her blog I discovered many other wonderful "sewing enthusiasts" and decided to open my own blog, to be able to communicate  share ideas with the English and the Hebrew speaking folks out there. Meanwhile reading Gertie's blog and taking her classes on Craftsy has become a custom activity, so of course when her book was released I quickly pre-ordered my copy and waited patiently for it to arrive. 

The book was everything I have expected. Gretchen has turned all her long harvested work over the years of writing the blog into accessible knowledge in a hard and (extremely cute) copy. In other words, for those of you cracking their heads alone- how to manage sewing those vintage pattern of yours or execute some of the inspired images in your head (as I used to) - this is the book for you. It has all the needed techniques in one place, and if you'll  need a bit more elaboration, just search the same subject in the Gertie's blog. 


I have read some critique about Gertie's book, mostly being around the fitting issues that people noticed in the photographs. I however totally adored that, since it showed once again that Gertie is HUMAN and can gain a little weight when she sits all day and works on her book (I did working on my thesis!) and that kind of made the book even dearer to me. I love seeing some curves on a model, I miss it a lot in the fashion world. It actually had a therapeutic value for me as a woman living in a skinny-model obsessed world.. 
The fact that I share a similar body shape with Gretchen also really helped. She based the patterns on her own and a pretty prevalent female shape, and I've noticed that I almost didn't need to make any fitting adjustments, beside length. I have worked with many pattern companies in the past and the fitting is always a big issue.

For those of you who have been following me on Pinterest it's probably no secret I love red. But lately I love it even more, and I admit- I experience intense pleasure as my eyes stumble across these juicy combinations. 

זה לא סוד שאני אוהבת אדום, ומי שעוקב אחרי בפינטרסט, בטח שם לכך לב:). אך לאחרונה קרה משהו, התחלתי לאהב אותו אף יותר, ואני מודה שכשעיני נתקלות באחד מהשילובים העסיסיים הללו, אני חווה ממש עונג צרוף.

It seems unconnected but it is.
As a child I used to be pretty conservative about food, and for some reason, scared of trying new tastes. I remember tasting avocado for the first time during my early 20's, and that moment having something opening up in me. Slowly as I grew older I started appreciating good cuisine, fell in love with cooking (and eating -yes ;), and today I love trying new things and letting the world influence me. I think that somehow - becoming open to colors is sort of a similar process.
A few weeks ago my husband and I visited India. It was a first time for him and a second for me (the first being long ago). Both of us were overwhelmed and then could not get enough of the tastes and the vivid colors of this incredibly rich culture. All women, no matter how old, were dressed in bold colored Saris and Punjabi suits, and were total delight for the eyes. I think perhaps due to this richness and it's lively energy, that India has an incredible ability to cure people's seasonal depressions.
Dior's New Look in the 50's had the same color intensity  He used bright monochromes and lots of rich material to cure the world's post World war 2 depression. I am not saying the world is down (or perhaps I am?) but look, the colors are back! 

זה נראה לא קשור אבל זה כן- בתור ילדה, היה לי טעם שמרני למדי בכל הקשור לניסיון של מאכלים חדשים. אני זוכרת שניסיתי אבוקדו לראשונה בשנות העשרים המוקדמות שלי, ונדמה לי שהחוויה הזו פתחה משהו בתוכי. ככל שהתבגרתי, התחלתי להעריך יותר מטבח איכותי, התאהבתי בבישול (ואכילה, כן, כן:)) והיום אני מאוד אוהבת לנסות דברים חדשים ו-לתת לעולם להשפיע עלי, סו טו ספיק. נדמה לי שפתיחות לצבעים ולשילובי צבעים מרעננים - היא תהליך דומה.
 לפני כמה שבועות ביקרנו אני ובעלי (אמרתי בעלי ובחיי שאני עדיין פנימיסטית) בהודו. זו היתה הפעם הראשונה עבורו ושניה עבורי (הראשונה היתה ארוכה והתרחשה לפני יותר מעשור..אלוהים.) בכל מקרה שנינו נפעמנו ולא יכולנו להשביע את תאבוננו לנוכח כל הריחות, הטעמים והצבעים בהם התרבות הזו כה עשירה. כל הנשים, לא משנה גילן, לבשו סרים וחליפות פנג'בי בצבעים בוהקים וחיים, והיו פשוט תענוג לעיניים. התיאוריה שלי שאולי בזכות העושר הזה והאנריה החיה שלה, שלהודו יש יכולת לרפא את כל הדיכאונות העונתיים שלנו.

גם הניו לוק של דיור, בסוף שנות ה40 של המאה הקודמת אופיין בעושר ואומץ צבעוני. הוא השתמש במונוכרומים מבריקים (אני מנסה לתרגם כאן מ vivid & bright), ובשפע של בד עשיר על מנת לרפא את העולם אחרי מלחמת העולם השניה. אני לא אומרת שהעולם בדיכאון (או שאולי אני כן?) אבל, תראו- הצבעים חזרו.. :)

Dior, 2012 to the right

Just a few years ago, when I started researching and learning about the design period that interested me, I went to the fabric market again and again, searching for vivid monochrome cottons I wanted to use for blouses and pants, and I could not find any. It only took a year or two and they are finally on the shelves here. This winter I have even spotted some bright and happy wools in a few shops, although not as much as I saw in Toronto or Paris. I am really grateful that I got a chance to travel this year and not depend on our local import industry. I brought back some amazing natural fabrics (in my favorite shades), some of which I already used and I will tell you about it in my next posts.

רק לפני כמה שנים, כשרק התחלתי לחקור לתוך התקופה העיצובית שעניינה אותי, סרקתי לשווא את נחלת בינימין עבור כותנות מונוכרמונית בצבעים אחידים וחיים (זו היתה תקופה של האופנה הפרחונית). זה רק לקח שנה- שנתיים והם על המדפים שלנו. השנה לשמחתי אפילו ראיתי כמה סוגי צמר שמתקרבים לצבעי העונה, אך זה כמובן לא דומה לעושר שיש לחנויות בדים בחו"ל להציע. למזלי יצא לי לנסוע קצת השנה והבאתי לי סטוק קטן של בדים טבעים, בגוונים שאני כ"כ אוהבת, (חלקם כבר נתפרו) ואני אספר עליהם בפוסטים הבאים.

If you have opened one of the latest Vogue issues, you must have seen these Marc Cain adds. I love this purple-wine-burgundy combination with red. It makes me happy just looking at it. 

מי שפתחה ווג בחודשים האחרונים בוודאי נתקלה במודעות האלה של מרק קיין. הימנית באופן מיוחד שבתה את חושיי. איזה כיף זה לשלב בין אדום לסגול, לבורדו, דובדבן, או ורוד ולא להראות כמו קליפ בשנות ה80? הגזרות הקלסיות מחזירות את המתבונן לשנות ה50 וה60 האופטימיות.

I know there has been a lot of suffering these past couple of days. I feel very sad for the families in Connecticut  and just want to send them a ray of light and love. I hope the good and the kind parts of humanity will eventually surpass the loss and the pain. 

I wish us all more warm and happy colors, such as this pallet, for the winter. This is a family of red and oranges, and they can ALL be mixed. Don't you just want to dive into this square?

My Red Sundress - שמלת הקיץ האדומה שלי

שמלת הקיץ האדומה בעצם נולדה מתוך פנטזיה או זיכרון עמום מקייצי הילדות שביליתי בחופי יורמלה.

The red sundress was born out of an old fantasy slash memory from my childhood summers on the beaches of Jūrmala.

כל קיץ המשפחה שלי שכרה קוטג' קטן באחת מתחנות הרכבת הרבות של יורמלה (המלוות את קו היער והחוף), ואני התרוצצתי לי בסנדלים, אספתי פירות יער, רכבתי על אופניים, ובניתי ארמונות בחול הלבן של המפרץ. אני זוכרת את עצמי עולה בהתרגשות במעלה שביל היער, שמתחלף לדיונות והופך לחוף מרהיב לנגד עיני, ליבי פועם משמחה.

Every summer my family rented a little cottage house at one of the many railway stations of  Jūrmala  (settled along the forest and the beach), and I've spent the whole three months of summer vacations running around in my sandals, picking berries, riding bicycles and building castles out of Urmala's snow white sand.

לעזוב מקום שבו נולדת בגיל צעיר זה כמו לעזוב מישהו שעדיין נורא אוהבים. יש בזה משהו קצת מנוגד לטבע.

Leaving a homeland at an early age is like having to leave someone you still love deeply. There is something unnatural to it.

באופן כללי כל עניין התפירה עבורי הוא היכולת להוציא לפועל את כל הדימוים הויזואלים והחושנים שכאילו חיים בתוכי, אך אני לא מצליחה למצוא אותם בעולם החומרי בחוץ. היה חלום על שמלת קיץ קלילה ואוורירית מכותנה, שנפתחת בקלות ע"י כפתורים, ואפשר לשים אותה מעל בגד ים.

The whole sewing passion for me is the ability to actually reproduce all these visual and sensual images or memories, my mind is full of. Something I see on my inside and would like to see more on the outside too, if that makes any sense:). I wanted to feel cotton against my skin and be able to button up the dress easily over my bathing suit.

באיזשהו אופן מופלא שרק המוח מסוגל לעשות, זיכרונות הקיץ בילדותי התערבבו עם הדימוים מהסרטים הישנים שראיתי, ונולדה השמלה האדומה, שהסילואט שלה מזכיר קצת את הניו לוק של דיור. 

Somehow, in a misterious way only the mind works, the memories from my childhood summers met the ones from the old soviet movies I watched and the red sundress, with a somewhat New Look Silhouette, was born.

עבור הבסיס של החלק העליון השתמשתי בגזרה של אנג'לה קיין, את החלק התחתון דגמתי ישירות על הבובה. הגזרה המקורית היא של חצאית ישרה, לצרכים שלי הפכתי אותה למתרחבת והוספתי כ10 ס"מ בכל צד עבור הפנסים. מעבר לזה רציתי ללכת על לולאות מעוצבות, שעבורם הוספתי פיסות כותנה לבנה - מהמפה הישנה של סבתא שלי. רק אני יודעת את זה אבל זה הופך אוהת לעוד יותר מיוחדת בשבילי.

For the base I used Angela Kane's pattern, whom I mentioned before. Angela's patterns are great in many aspects- she does not add seam allowances for example, which I love, they are printed on a pattern making paper, which makes it easier to grade and play with, they also come in many sizes, and every size comes in a different file. On the other hand they have zero instructions, so you must have some sewing understanding and experience, or at least a good reference book by your side. 

מילה לגבי הגזרות של אנג'לה קיין, שכתבתי עליה מעט באחד מהפוסטים הקודמים. בעיקרון אני מאוד אוהבת לעבוד עם הגזרות שלה, הן מגיעות בקבצים להדפסה והרכבה עצמית, מודפסות על נייר מיוחד שמאפשר לשחק עם הגזרה ולשנות אותה בקלות יחסית, היא לא מוסיפה שוליים לתפרים, מה שמאפשר סימון מדויק יותר ונותן חופש להוסיף איזה שולים שבא לך (בתפירה עלית למשל נהוג להשאיר הרבה בד עבור התפרים). אבל הגזרות מגיעות ללא הוראות שימוש, ומצריכות ידע מקדים בתפירה והרכזה של בגד, או לכל הפחות ספר תפירה טוב לצידך.

In this pattern, I made quite a few changes. I turned the streight skirt front pieces into flared ones and added about 5 inches on each side for pleats, that in my view creates a more flattering fit. I also drew my own button holes (the pattern does not have any marks for some reason) and added the bound buttonhole details. To bound the buttonholes I used pieces of white cotton from an old tableloth of my grandma's. Only I know it, but it makes it more special.

עשיתי לה לולאות קונטרסטות (מי יודעת איך אומרים bound buttonholes  בעברית?!?) ומצאתי כפתורים חמודים בניחוח של פעם. הלולאות האלה נראות כאילו הן התלבשו יפה ורק מחכות לפגישה עם הכפתור הנכון. ואיזה מזל שלכל לולאה יש את הכפתור שלה.

So the contrast bound buttonholes go together well with the really pretty black and white buttons I have found. In my mind this cute little button hole looks like it got all dressed up to meet his other half.  And how great is the fact that - there is a button for every button hole.

מכיוון שמדובר בשמלת קיץ קלילה, סיימתי את כל התפרים שלי באוברלוק. בשתמשתי בחוט לבן על החלק הפנימי של השמלה וזה מוסיף ליופי שלה גם מבפנים. במכפלת החלטתי לנסות את רגלית החדשה לתפר עיוור שקניתי. התפר נמצא בכמעט בכל מכונה אך יש מרגלית מיוחדת שמקפלת את הבד ומקלה על עשיית המכפלת.

Since this is a light summer dress, I finished all my inner seams with a simple overlock. I did use a while contrasting thread to make it pretty on the inside too. I finished the hem using my new blind hem foot, and it turned out to be a great discovery. I will definitely use this hem technique in many cases not requiring couture finishes.

אני מתכננת לעשות עוד כמה גרסאו קצת יותר פשוטות ויומיומיות של השמלות קיץ, כאלה שלא יהיה חבל ללבוש לחוף. עוד מעט אראה לכם גם את הבגד ים שחייב לבוא מתחת לשמלה כזו.  הוא כמעט גמור!

I plan to make a few more simpler versions of summer dresses, that I won't feel sorry for wearing to the beach. I also will soon show you the bathing suit that must be worn under this summer dress. It's almost done !

                                                                       

מתחשק לי לסיים את הסיפור בשיר אחד מילדותי, שמזכיר את הלך רוחי בימים ההם (גם אני היתי סקרנית, פתוחה ורציתי להגיע לאפריקה :)) 

זה שיר מ"על כיפה אדומה", סרט ילדים שהוא מעין אינטרפרטציה חופשית לאגדת הילדים כיפה אדומה, שכמו כל בסרטים שגדלנו עליהם, יש בו שתי רמות, אחת שפונה לילד שבך, ואחת קצת ביקורתית, שמלמדת משהו על החיים ובני אדם.

I feel like finishing this story with a song from one of my favorite childhood movies, which kind of signifies my state of mind back then 
(I was also curious, very open, and wanted to get to Africa:))

The movie is called "About the red hood" and it's a children's musical, which like all the soviet children movies has two levels, one for the child in you and the other for the adult, showing something about life and people.
