Burda Starburst Skirt - Ghetto Style - בורדה הולכת גטו

Hey guys! Look, I made a skirt :) This is a Burda pattern, from one of my favorite 2012 issues. In one of my next posts I'll give a pattern review and talk a bit about construction (there are a few tricks!). Meanwhile you get to enjoy our amateur instagram photoshoot. Caution- extremely URBAN post ahead! We had lunch yesterday in Jaffa with a couple of friends and I made my husband shoot me:) In the last years Jaffa, and especially the flee market area became one of the hippest places in the Tel Aviv region, but I hold the pride for discovering it much earlier. Can you believe that I used to live on this street?

חברים, תפרתי חצאית. זו גזרת בורדה, מתוך אחד הגליונות האהובים עלי מ2012. על התפירה אספר באחד מהפוסטים הבאים (יש שם כמה טריקים), בנתיים תהנו מסשן הצילומים החובבני שלנו באינסטגרם. זהירות, פוסט אורבני במיוחד לפניך. פגשנו חברים אתמול ביפו, וניצלתי את ההזדמנות. יפו ואיזור שוק הפשפשים במיוחד הפך להיות מקום ממש מגניב בשנים האחרונות, אך אני שומרת לי זכות ראשונים על כך שחנכתי אותה, בשנים שלפני הטרנד.

I added some wall art photos I took while living there to give you a fuller feel of the place. Some of it was painted over already, so these are pieces of history so to speak. The art may change, but the vibe remains. Jaffa reminds me a bit of the eastern Berlin in the years after the wall fell, very lively and creative, artists and locals living next to each other. Lots of nice restaurants and designer shops opened everywhere, the flee market is as popular as ever, vintage is in nowadays. I like it, but as usual the trendiness has raised the real estate prices, so soon no really cool people will be able to afford it, not to talk about the people born in it. In case you are wondering what's the appeal in Jaffa, take a look at the beach photos or google the old city. Anyway- this is the skirt.. Stretch jersey, pleated front and back. I wore it Ghetto style this time. Got a crush on this little jacket lately. Sometimes you do need H&M.

הוספתי קצת תמונות מאומנות רחוב שצילמתי בתקופה שגרתי שם. חלק כבר נצבע מעל, אז אלו הן פיסות היסטוריה. יפו מזכירה בשנים האחרונות את ברלין המזרחית אחרי נפילת החומה, מאוד חיה ובועטת. הפריחה התרבותית והחברתית מבורכת בעיני, אך הטרנדיות כרגיל משפיעה על מחירי הדירות, ונראה כי בקרוב אנשים מעניינים באמת כבר לא יוכלו לגור שם. כרגע אני עדיין מרגישה שם בבית, ומקווה שכך ישאר. בכל מקרה, החצאית- ג'רסי בגוון דובדבן (?), פנסים אלכסונים מקדימה ומאחור. הפעם לבשתי אותה ב"סגנון גטו", עם הג'קט הקטן הזה שאני חורשת עליו לאחרונה. לפעמים אנו זקוקים לH&M.

Besides the flee market area, the Old Port had really been transformed. It 

used to be all about fresh fish, and now there is art and fashion too. Book shops, food market, bars, art shows, and a beautiful sunset on the sea. I wore the wine skirt with the red portrait blouse and my grandmother's silk scarf. I had plans on combining these colors more, remember?

אהבה נוספת לכל החיים זה נמל יפו. כשהיתי ממש צעירה היתי מפנטזת על דירה ברובע האמנים, אך עכשיו זה יהיה רועש מדי למגורים:) שוק האוכל, תערוכות בהאנגרים, סטימצקי שנראה כמו בניו יורק, חנות עודפים של מעצבים, ואפילו סניף של הזקן והים. פעם נורא אהבתי את הקונטיינר, אך אני חייבת להודות שמשהו רע קרה לאוכל שם. פעם אכלנו שם סביצ'ה טונה ומנגו למות.. לא יודעת, מקווה שהוא יחזור למוטב. וחזרה למלבושים- שידכתי את חצאית היין לחולצת הפורטרט האדומה וצעיף משי שהיה שייך לסבתא שלי, קרוב ללב. זוכרים שהיו לי תוכניות  לגבי הצבעים האלה?

The Gods Of Colors - אלוהי הצבעים

So the Jade "no evil eye can hurt you" dress is finally finished.

אז שמלת הג'ייד "נגד כל עין הרע" מוכנה.

Normally I am not superstitious, but the combination of these colors made me think. Ever since facebook and other social platforms entered our lives we have been exposed to all sorts of new energies, naturally not all positive. This blog thing has definitely been the bravest social act on my behalf, and I still get paranoid from time to time, thinking of all the people that can see me, when I can't see them.. 

אני לא בן אדם שמאמין באמונות טפלות בדרך כלל, אך ההמשמעות הסימבולית של שני הצבעים האלה גרמה לי לחשוב. מאז עידן הפייסבוק ושאר הפלטפורמות החברתיות, נכנסו לחיינו אנרגיות חדשות רבות, באופן טבעי, לא כולן חיוביות. למרות כוונותיו הטובות של הבלוג אני עדיין חוששת לפעמים, כאשר אני חושבת על כל האנשים שנכנסים ויכולים "לראות" אותי מבלי שאני אוכל "לראות" אותם. 

Throughout history and in different places of the planet, Jade and it's fellow gemstone Turquoise were used as a talisman, have been considered to bring good fortune, and were believed to have healing powers. Jade has been a very important jewel stone of the Chinese and the Mauryan (New Zeeland) cultures, and Turquoise is a popular Middle eastern and South American gemstone, going back to the Ancient Egypt, the Persian and Mayan bygone empires.

Turquoise is a purification stone. It dispels negative energy and can be worn to protect against outside influences, promote self-realization and assist creative problem solving. Jade is the ultimate symbol of calm and serenity, it helps bring serenity to the mind by releasing negative thoughts. As a stone of balance and healing, it alleviates anxiety and fear based emotions. The colors ore the extensions of the stones.

טורקיז היא אבן מטהרת. היא מנטרלת אנרגיה רעה ויכולה לשמש כמגן מפני השפעות חיצוניות בלתי רצויות. כמו כן היא מקדמת תובנה ופתרון בעיות יצירתי. ג'ייד היא הסמל האולטימטיבי של רוגע ושלווה, היא מרגיעה את המוח ומשחררת אותו ממחשבות שליליות. בתור אבן האיזון והריפוי היא מנטרלת רגשות שמקורם בפחד. הצבעים, לעניינו, משמשים כשלוחות של האבנים. 

According to Eastern philosophies Red is the color of the base or root Chakra, which is located at the base of the spine and allows us to be grounded and connect to the universal energies. In China, red is associated with good luck and fortune. To the Hindu, red symbolizes joy, life, energy, and creativity, in fact Islamic, Hindu, and Chinese brides traditionally wear red. Psychologically Red increases enthusiasm, encourages action and confidence and provides a sense of protection from fears and anxiety. 

לפי פילוסופיות מזרחיות אחדות, הצבע האדום קשור לצ'קרת הבסיס, הממוקדת בבסיס עמוד השדרה, ואחראית על חיבור לקרקע ושורשים מצד אחד ולאנרגיות היקום מצד שני. בסין, הצבע האדום מסמל מזל טוב, בהודו - אדום מסמל שמחה, חיות, אנרגיה ויצירתיות (עד כדי כך שבאופן מסורתי כלות הודיות, סיניות ומוסלמיות לובשות אדום ביום חתונתן). מבחינה פסיכולוגית  הצבע האדום מגביר התלהבות, פעילות וביטחון ומספק תחושה של הגנה מפני חרדות ופחדים. 

Personally I love knowing a bit more about the things I like or wear for that matter; learning the symbolic meaning of colors has made the process more meaningful, and therefore enjoyable.. I believe we are connected to everything and everyone, and opening the door to this rich collective subconscious is a way to open up creatively. Have you ever seen Como Agua Para Chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate )? It talks about love and cooking, and the magic powers they possess.. Well maybe there is something similar in dressmaking.

אני לא יודעת מה איתכן, אבל אני מאוד אוהבת לדעת קצת יותר על הדברים שמושכים אותי או שאני לובשת, לצורך העניין. המשמעויות הסימבוליות מאחורי הצבעים הפכו את  השמלה לבעלת משמעות, ולכן מהנה יותר. אני מאמינה שאנו קשורים בהכול ובכולם, וכל שנתחבר יותר למקור, הנמצא בלא מודע הקולקטיבי שלנו, נגדל ו"נתעשר" יותר.. האם ראיתן פעם את "כמו מים לשוקולדה"? הוא מדבר על אהבה ובישול והכוחות המיסטיים שהם מחזיקים. בעיני התפירה מעניקה משהו דומה. 

 ועכשיו קצת על התפירה עצמה - Now a bit about the construction

I finished the lining and the facings using Connie Long's method she wrote about on threads magazine  -which is attaching the facings to the lining (without interfacing it) prior to attaching the lining to the fashion fabric. I love this method. I have to say that the dress only feels like one to me if it's lined. This one, maybe because of the cotton too, feels really vintage. Like something I would dig out from the back room of Mamie, (most amazing vintage shop you'll ever find) in Paris.

סיימתי את הבטנה בדרך שלמדתי כאן. הבטנה מחוברת לרצועות העיבוד בטרם שניהם נתפרים אל הבגד. אני ממש אוהבת את השיטה זו, וגם כפי שאולי כתבתי כאן בעבר, רק שמלה עם בטנה מרגישה עבורי כשמלה. משהו בעשייה של זו - השילוב של בדי הכותנה עם העבודה הידנית, ממש לקח אותי אחורה.. לצעירותה של סבתא שלי, פתאום הרגשתי מה זה בגד, ובגלל ההשקעה שלי בו- חוויתי מעין אהבה וחיבור שמעולם לא הרגשתי בתאי המדידה של זארה. השמלה הזו ספציפית מרגישה ממש וינטאז', כמו משהו שיכולתי למצוא בחדר האחורי של ממי ((או ממי בלו) חנויות הוינטאז, הכי מדהימות- בפאריז).

I never understood why  if it's lining we have to hem the two layers separately  so I attached the hem of the sleeve and the skirt to the lining as if it was underlining, so far it seems to work fine...

חיברתי את המכפלות לבטנה בתפרים נסתרים. זו שיטה שלי, ואני לא בטוחה עד כמה היא "נחשבת נכונה", עבורי היא עובדת - אין תפרי מכפלת על הצד החיצוני של הבגד.

I used cotton for both layers and I must say, I have mixed feelings about it. This type of cotton has no stretch in it and on this kind of design sometimes wrinkles in a less than a flattering way. The next "upgraded" version will be in rayon, and hopefully it will drape a bit better. 

השמלה הזו עשויה משתי שכבות של כותנה, מה שמונע קצת את הנטיה לקמטוטים ושומר על הבגד לאורך זמן, וכמובן מרגיש נושם, קריר (לקיץ) ונעים על הגוף. יחד עם זאת יש לי לבטים ונראה לי שאת הגרסה הבאה של הגזרה אעשה מויסקוזה. הכותנה נוטה להתקמט באיזורים "הבעייתיים" ולכן לפעמים מדגישה את מה שמודגש גם ככה.. זה לא קרה לי עם צמר ומעניין עם זה יקרה עם ויסקוזה.

Although I made all my regular adjustments (shorter front and back, forwarded shoulders.. you really get to know your body when you sew!) making this projects I found some more. I need to lower the the bust dart, which is looking just a bit too optimistic for my age.. , and I think I might have a sway back ..?? 

I have an idea this has something to do with me putting on  heels, which might be the reason why I haven't found out about it while fitting. 

גיליתי שעלי לעשות עוד שינוי מסוים לגזרה. ככל הנראה יש לי גב תחתון משופע קצת ולכן ברוב השמלות הצמודות שאני עושה יש מעט בד עודף באיזור העליון של האגן. לא גיליתי את זה במדידות כי לא שמתי עקבים.. הנה הוכחה מעשית לאופן שהחברים האלה הורסים לנו את הבריאות.. בכל מקרה, זה נורא מעניין איזה דברים מגלים על הגוף שלנו כשמתחילים לתפור. זה לוקח אותך ממקום של "יפה" או לא, לתיאור יותר ספציפי- מי אני ומהם הקוים של הגוף שלי.

Our little family disagrees on the matter of the bow details, I think it's cute and fun to wear occasionally, but my other half thinks it's a bit childish. Boys.. They all secretly want to dress up too, but society is too harsh on them. Anyway, I'm putting up to your vote. What do you think - in this case - bows in or out? 

היו לנו קצת חילוקי דעות במשפחה לגבי הנחיצות של סיכות הפפיונים האדומים שהכנתי. אני חושבת שהן חמודות ומותר לפעמים להתלבש בשביל הכיף, אבל החצי השני שלי חושב שיש בזה משהו ילדותי מדי. הבנים האלה.. כולם מתים להתחפש בתוך תוכם, אך החברה שופטת אותם בחומרה. בכל מקרה, אני משאירה את זה להחלטה שלכן- במקרה הזה- עם או בלי פפיונים?

My "Emerald Green Dress" is In Jade! :) שמלת "האמרלד" שלי היא בצבע ירקן

Just a quick post to let you know about my progress. I finished the dress- on the outside, still have the lining, facings and hemming to do. Sorry for the dark-ish photos, that's all the romantic lighting we have at home.. The process was lots of fun, very creatively freeing so to speak. Pattern making is so much fun, much more appealing to me than following a ready pattern.. Some people are just bad at following orders..:) 

Thanks to Zoe from So, Zo, What Do You Know I now know that the tone of green I am using for this version is called Jade and what do you know - it is also from a jewel family. I love jewel tones, on me or in my apartment  and after having made a little research I came to a conclusion that a. these are the most flattering tones for brunettes, b. these colors hug the female curves in a most seducing way (that is my re-framing for the usual "slimming" verb, which I in my opinion is a part of a misogynistic discourse)  , and c. they work best with the clean line designs I love most.

So having found out this Jade too is a jewel tone, I now feel less guilty for not making it in emerald  (I ran out of fabric I was planning for. actually, not true I didn't buy enough. one of those rare moments of trying to save.. never works for me.) In this cotton version I decided to let go of the fishtail godet, it was too stiff, and left a nice back slit.

פוסט מהיר, רק לעדכן אתכן על בהתקדמותי. סיימתי את השמלה "מבחוץ", נשאר עדיין לטפל בבטנה, עיבודים ומכפלות. (מצטערת על התמונות הקצת כהות, זו כל התאורה הרומנטית שיש לנו בבית ..)

התהליך הפעם היה ממש כיפי, יצירתי ומשחרר. למרות שיש לי אוסף נאה של גזרות מוכנות בבית, אני תמיד נהנית יותר להתחיל מרעיון ו"ליצוק" אותו לחומר, מאשר לעבוד על גזרה מוכנה הדרשת מעקב אחר הוראות בלבד. אבל זו אני.. לטוב ולרע.

הודות לזואי, מ-So, Zo, What Do You Know, אני יודעת עכשיו שהטון של ירוק שאני השתמשתי לגרסה זו נקרא באנגלית ג'ייד (ירקן בעברית) ואתן יודעות מה, גם הוא שייך למשפחת צבעי אבני החן (aka jewel tones). מצאתי שאלו הם הצבעים שאני באופן טבעי נמשכת אליהם הכי הרבה ו"הפתעה גדולה" הם גם המחמיאים לי ביותר. מחקירה קטנה של הנושא גיליתי שמדובר בצבעים שטובים עם הברונטיות, הנראות הכי טוב עטופות בגווני אבני חן.. אני אוהבת את הרעיון , אתן בטח יכולות להבין.גם אמרלד הוא צבע של אבן חן שבעברית נקראת - ברקת, והיא יקרה אף יותר מיהלום.

מעבר להטבה עם הברונטיות, מדובר בצבעים המחמיאים ביותר לגוף הנשי ולקימוריו (אם את אישה עם היקפים נדיבים ואינך רוצה להסתתר עד סוף ימי חייך מאחורי שחור, תעשי חיפוש מהיר לjewel tones בגוגל ולכי לבחור לך שמלה באחד מהם). 

ומעבר להכול, הצבעים האלה פשוט נראים הכי טוב עם העיצוב הנקי שאני אוהבת. 

בקיצור עכשיו אני מרגישה קצת יותר טוב עם הבחירה של הבד, שהחליף ברגע האחרון את ירוק הברקת, אשר הסתבר כי לוקה בחסר בערך במטר.. (כן, קצת כעסתי על עצמי אפשר להגיד.. קניתי מעט מדי בד באחת הפעמים הבודדות האלה שהחלטתי להיות חסכנית. אף פעם לא עבד בשבילי) בגרסת הכותנה הזו החלטתי בסוף לוותר על הגודה- זנב הדג החמוד, כי הוא היה קצת נוקשה מדי, והשארתי שסע נדיב. אבל מספיק עם ספוילרים! שבוע טוב ואני "אראה" אתכן בקרוב. אל תבהלו אם פתאום תראו עוד פוסט ממני במהלך היום, יש לי כמה דברים כמעט מוכנים במגירה שהגיע זמנם.

The Dress Inspector - Jil Sander's Emerald Green Dress

I was sick for a few days, with a fever and a nasty cough, so I was not able to do much, cognitively et cetera. So what does a person do when sick on a weekend? Catch up on the first season of "Girls", for starters. I have to shamefully admit that I enjoy this show just a little too much for my age.. like ten years older than the characters.. I don't even wanna think what that means.. The other thing is of course sewing. But what can a girl do when she's too sick to sew? Well, what else but to seek inspiration webwise. So I'd like to introduce you to my new blog's game- it's called the dress inspector, or "I spot an invisible zipper". I did want to be Sherlock Holmes when I grew up.

היתי חולה כמה ימים, עם חום, שיעול וחוסר יכולת לתפקד, קוגניטיבית ובכלל. בהתחשב בעובדה שאני צריכה לעשות בערך הכול ואתמול, זו היתה מכה קשה. אך מה בכל זאת עושה אדם חולה בסוף שבוע? משלים את פעריו התרבותיים בצפיה בעונה הראשונה של "גירלס" האמריקאית (אני מתביישת להודות שאני נהנית קצת יותר מדי מהסדרה, בכל זאת בערך עשור מפריד ביני לבין גיבורותיה.. אני אפילו לא רוצה להתחיל לחשוב מה זה אומר). הדבר השני הוא כמובן תפירה. אבל מה עושים אם חולים מדי בשביל לתפור? מחפשים השראת תפירה באינטרנט! :) אני רוצה להציג בפני כן נושא חדש בבלוג - הנקרא- the dress inspector, או "אני מזהה רוכסן נסתר". תמיד רציתי להיות שרלוק הולמס.

So, question number one is- do you recognize this emerald green dress? One point for you if you got that one right!  This is Jil Sander, actually designed for the brand by Raf Simons, in 2012. Raf got standing ovations for his last collection for Sander's, and this one is from a season before. His career is definitely one to delve into, if you are into this kind of thing, readers.

אז שאלה מספר אחת היא- האם אתן מזהות את השמלה הזו? ירוק אמרלד - צבע השנה.. נקודה אחת למי שידעה. השמלה של ג'יל סנדר, שלמעשה עוצבה עבור המותג ע"י רף סימונס, המעצב שהחליף את גליאו בבית דיור. רף זכה למחיאות כפיים סוערות אחרי הקולקציה האחרונה שלו לבית סנדר, ועל אף ששאלו כיצד בית האופנה יתגבר על פרידה ממנו, לו עצמו אף אחד לא דאג, ובצדק. רף הוא אחד המעצבים ששווה להתעמק קצת בסיפור הקריירה שלו, אם אתם בעניין שכזה, קוראי הבלוג היקרים שלי.

The way to play this game is to inspect this dress thoroughly- and try to guess as many design and construction features as possible. Before we begin- here are some of the dress details from the ready to wear site-

איך משחקים את המשחק הזה? אנחנו בוחנות את שמלה לעומק ומזהות את כל הפרטים העיצוביים שלה. לפני שנתחיל- הנה מה שהאתר מספר לנו עליה:

So, what do I spot? 

1. I spot a loose kimono sleeve, without underarm gussets.

2. I spot two high front bodice darts, no bust darts, and a center seam.

 No such seam in the skirt.

3. I spot two front skirt darts covered with detachable brooches. 

אז מה אני מזהה?

1. שרוול קימונו רופף (שרוול המחובר לחלק הקדמי ללא תפר)

2. שני מתפרים גבוהים ותפר אמצעי (שאינו חוזר על עצמו בחצאית) 

3. שני מתפרים מקבילים בחצאית - החיבורים לחלק העליון מקושטים בסיכות ניתנות להסרה

4. I spot a very deep V opening in the back and a low invisible zipper.

5. I spot two back skirt darts and some unclear situation at the bodice back. What are these? Darts? Pleats? I think one dart or pleat is imitating the V.

6. I spot a very high open slit. 

4. פתח גב V עמוק מאוד בגב, אין סיכוי ללבוש אותה עם חזיה

5. 4 מתפרים בחצאית ומצב לא ברור בחלק העליון.. - מה זה נראה לכם?

מתפרים? פנסים? שני מתפרים.

6. אני מזהה שסע גבוה מאוד ששוב מקושט בסיכה 

I actually love the dress's front and hate it's back. I am going to make this dress just for the kicks of it, but I am changing the back- to a more shallow V, and the back slit-  to a godet, for a full retro mood. I find something a little less elegant in a back that has asks to show three parts of your body simultaneously.  Too much is always too much, don't you think? Also this dress was clearly designed for women who don't fight gravitation with their breasts (perhaps like Anna Del Russo). It might be an un-modest statement, but I think I can make this dress work better than Anna, a woman that always makes me wanna hug and feed her porridge.

למעשה אני מאוד אוהבת את החלק הקדמי של השמלה ודי שונאת את האחורי. לדעתי אחד מאלו היה מספיק- פתח גב עמוק או שסע גבוה. השמלה כמובן נועדה במקור לנשים עם חזה מאוד קטן שלא צריכות תמיכה כנגד כוח המשיכה (אולי כמו אנה דל רוסו). אולי זה לא צנוע, אבל אני חושבת שאני אעשה יותר צדק לשמלה הזו מהאישה הזו, שכל פעם שאני רואה אותה בא לי לחבק ולהאכיל אותה בדייסה.

ואם נחזור לשמלה- יש משהו ב"פתוח מדי" הזה מאחור שהוא אנטי אלגנטי בעיני, מעניין אם תסכימו. אולי זה יותר מדי מהכול? גם גב עמוק, שיורד מתחת למותן, וגם שסע גבוהה.. חייבים לוותר על חלק מזה. לכן בגזרה שאני הכנתי- פתח גב עדיין יהיה עם V עמוק אך לא עד הטוסיק, ובמקום השסע אני אשים- גודה. זה משולש בד כזה שמכניסים לתוך השסע - והוא מציץ בפלרטטנות כשאת הולכת, כמו זנב קטן, שומר על הצורה הצמודה של החצאית ועדיין מאפשר תנועה. כיוון שאני לא מבינה את המטרה בפנסים בגב, אני הולכת לעשות רק שני מתפרים אחוריים ושניים מקבילים להם בחצאית.

The main charm of this dress, besides the color, is the V neck and the kimono sleeve combo, and the air in the shoulders as opposed to the slim silhouette of the skirt. The other issue is the length  this is very vintage- about 15 cm below the knee, but there is something really appealing in it for me.

Now the real question and it is always an issue- is how is the lining made? Does the dress have facings you think? Is the lining stitched to the sleeve's hem by machine or is it free flowing like in the skirt..? 

Lets play this game and I will show you in my next posts how to easily change your existing patterns to achieve this look. 

הקסם האמיתי של השמלה הזו, מעבר לצבע העשיר (ירוק אמרלד שולתתת!!) הוא בפתח V הקדמי והשילוב שלו עם השרוולים הנופלים, והניגוד בין זה לבין הסילואט הצר של החצאית. גם האורך הוא מאוד מיוחד- שימו לב, בערך 15 ש"מ מתחת לברך, מאוד וינטאז' - שנות ה50 (ינספיירד) ומעניין מאוד בעיני. 

האורך הזה גם שלט בשנות ה30, אך החצאית דאז אופיינו בגזרה מתרחבת מעט למטה ודגש על מותניים צרות, ההפך מהפיפטיז, וגם ההפך מהמותניים שלי. :)

עכשיו השאלה האמיתית היא איך השמלה הזו מורכבת? מה קורה עם הבטנה? יש רצועות עיבוד פנימיות? הבטנה תפורה לשרוולים או חופשיה כמו המכפלת למטה?

בואו לשחק את המשחק הזה איתי ואני אראה לכן איך אפשר לעשות את הגזרה הזו בקלות,

ולהשיג את המראה מבלי להוציא 1115$. אאוצ'

P.s. I have also stumbled upon this version, that I can't really get the appeal of. Both are sold on the same site, and have minor differences, such as the price (1449 $ - what? ) material (Green silk, cotton and wool ) and the back V depth, which is a bit more humane. But jeez, what's with the loose fit? Doesn't it just look like a terrible size mistake?

נ.ב. נתקלתי גם בגרסה הזו של השמלה, באותו אתר, שאני לא ממש מצליחה להבין את המשיכה שבה. ההבדלים הם במחיר (1449$ - מה?) , בבד (משי ירוק, כותנה וצמר) ובאורך הפתח בגב, שהופך לקצת יותר הומאני. אבל אלוהים - מה קרה לגזרה? זה נראה קצת כמו טעות חמורה בבחירת המידה, לא?

WEEKLY INSPIRATION: REd - I love you & I love your family! השראה שבועית

For those of you who have been following me on Pinterest it's probably no secret I love red. But lately I love it even more, and I admit- I experience intense pleasure as my eyes stumble across these juicy combinations. 

זה לא סוד שאני אוהבת אדום, ומי שעוקב אחרי בפינטרסט, בטח שם לכך לב:). אך לאחרונה קרה משהו, התחלתי לאהב אותו אף יותר, ואני מודה שכשעיני נתקלות באחד מהשילובים העסיסיים הללו, אני חווה ממש עונג צרוף.

It seems unconnected but it is.
As a child I used to be pretty conservative about food, and for some reason, scared of trying new tastes. I remember tasting avocado for the first time during my early 20's, and that moment having something opening up in me. Slowly as I grew older I started appreciating good cuisine, fell in love with cooking (and eating -yes ;), and today I love trying new things and letting the world influence me. I think that somehow - becoming open to colors is sort of a similar process.
A few weeks ago my husband and I visited India. It was a first time for him and a second for me (the first being long ago). Both of us were overwhelmed and then could not get enough of the tastes and the vivid colors of this incredibly rich culture. All women, no matter how old, were dressed in bold colored Saris and Punjabi suits, and were total delight for the eyes. I think perhaps due to this richness and it's lively energy, that India has an incredible ability to cure people's seasonal depressions.
Dior's New Look in the 50's had the same color intensity  He used bright monochromes and lots of rich material to cure the world's post World war 2 depression. I am not saying the world is down (or perhaps I am?) but look, the colors are back! 

זה נראה לא קשור אבל זה כן- בתור ילדה, היה לי טעם שמרני למדי בכל הקשור לניסיון של מאכלים חדשים. אני זוכרת שניסיתי אבוקדו לראשונה בשנות העשרים המוקדמות שלי, ונדמה לי שהחוויה הזו פתחה משהו בתוכי. ככל שהתבגרתי, התחלתי להעריך יותר מטבח איכותי, התאהבתי בבישול (ואכילה, כן, כן:)) והיום אני מאוד אוהבת לנסות דברים חדשים ו-לתת לעולם להשפיע עלי, סו טו ספיק. נדמה לי שפתיחות לצבעים ולשילובי צבעים מרעננים - היא תהליך דומה.
 לפני כמה שבועות ביקרנו אני ובעלי (אמרתי בעלי ובחיי שאני עדיין פנימיסטית) בהודו. זו היתה הפעם הראשונה עבורו ושניה עבורי (הראשונה היתה ארוכה והתרחשה לפני יותר מעשור..אלוהים.) בכל מקרה שנינו נפעמנו ולא יכולנו להשביע את תאבוננו לנוכח כל הריחות, הטעמים והצבעים בהם התרבות הזו כה עשירה. כל הנשים, לא משנה גילן, לבשו סרים וחליפות פנג'בי בצבעים בוהקים וחיים, והיו פשוט תענוג לעיניים. התיאוריה שלי שאולי בזכות העושר הזה והאנריה החיה שלה, שלהודו יש יכולת לרפא את כל הדיכאונות העונתיים שלנו.

גם הניו לוק של דיור, בסוף שנות ה40 של המאה הקודמת אופיין בעושר ואומץ צבעוני. הוא השתמש במונוכרומים מבריקים (אני מנסה לתרגם כאן מ vivid & bright), ובשפע של בד עשיר על מנת לרפא את העולם אחרי מלחמת העולם השניה. אני לא אומרת שהעולם בדיכאון (או שאולי אני כן?) אבל, תראו- הצבעים חזרו.. :)

Dior, 2012 to the right

Just a few years ago, when I started researching and learning about the design period that interested me, I went to the fabric market again and again, searching for vivid monochrome cottons I wanted to use for blouses and pants, and I could not find any. It only took a year or two and they are finally on the shelves here. This winter I have even spotted some bright and happy wools in a few shops, although not as much as I saw in Toronto or Paris. I am really grateful that I got a chance to travel this year and not depend on our local import industry. I brought back some amazing natural fabrics (in my favorite shades), some of which I already used and I will tell you about it in my next posts.

רק לפני כמה שנים, כשרק התחלתי לחקור לתוך התקופה העיצובית שעניינה אותי, סרקתי לשווא את נחלת בינימין עבור כותנות מונוכרמונית בצבעים אחידים וחיים (זו היתה תקופה של האופנה הפרחונית). זה רק לקח שנה- שנתיים והם על המדפים שלנו. השנה לשמחתי אפילו ראיתי כמה סוגי צמר שמתקרבים לצבעי העונה, אך זה כמובן לא דומה לעושר שיש לחנויות בדים בחו"ל להציע. למזלי יצא לי לנסוע קצת השנה והבאתי לי סטוק קטן של בדים טבעים, בגוונים שאני כ"כ אוהבת, (חלקם כבר נתפרו) ואני אספר עליהם בפוסטים הבאים.

If you have opened one of the latest Vogue issues, you must have seen these Marc Cain adds. I love this purple-wine-burgundy combination with red. It makes me happy just looking at it. 

מי שפתחה ווג בחודשים האחרונים בוודאי נתקלה במודעות האלה של מרק קיין. הימנית באופן מיוחד שבתה את חושיי. איזה כיף זה לשלב בין אדום לסגול, לבורדו, דובדבן, או ורוד ולא להראות כמו קליפ בשנות ה80? הגזרות הקלסיות מחזירות את המתבונן לשנות ה50 וה60 האופטימיות.

I know there has been a lot of suffering these past couple of days. I feel very sad for the families in Connecticut  and just want to send them a ray of light and love. I hope the good and the kind parts of humanity will eventually surpass the loss and the pain. 

I wish us all more warm and happy colors, such as this pallet, for the winter. This is a family of red and oranges, and they can ALL be mixed. Don't you just want to dive into this square?
