The RTW Version of Gertie's Wiggle Dress - Fall For Cotton

Hello readers,

This is my third version of Gertie's wiggle dress, that is also one of my entries for Fall For Cotton. I bought this grey and white print cotton this summer and thought it would be interesting to make something elegant out of it. I usually get ideas from fabric, putting it against my skin, playing with the drape and seeing what does it want to become. Well this one wanted to be a fitted dress, what are you gonna do.

שלום קוראים יקרים. מה שלומכם? הפוסט היום באנגלית- והוא עוסק בגרסה נוספת לשמלה של גרטי שתפרתי לאחרונה. אין לי הרבה זמן להתעסק בתפירה כשלעצמה, אבל מהגזרות של גרטי אני תמיד נהנית ולומדת משהו. הפעם רציתי להתנסות בתפירה בסגנון RTW, דוקא ללא כל העבודה הפנימית והתפרים הידניים שאני בד"כ כה אוהבת, אלא כמו שקונים ברשתות. הבד הוא כותנה מקהירי בדים, מהקיץ והוא זה שהכתיב לי מה הוא רוצה להיות. בד"כ אני מתחילה מהבד, מניחה אותו אל מול עורי, בודקת איך הוא נופל ושואלת מה הוא היה רוצה להיות. זה רצה להיות שמלה אלגנטית, אפילו שהוא "רק" כותנה תאילנדית. אני כ"כ אוהבת כותנה, שתתקמט כמה שהיא רוצה, זה שווה את זה.

I thought fine, you'll be a dress, but I want to experiment with the sewing techniques. I bought a RTW dress (omg, right?)  earlier this summer and was pleasantly surprised with how light it was. Drapey viscose (rayon) was unlined and all finished with a serger inside. I decided I need to try that, for once. What was mostly interesting  was that the princess seams were unnotched, and the seams where not pressed open. I decided to make Gertie's wiggle dress again, because the pattern was already traced, fit checked and the construction clear. To make the seams lay flat I pressed them to one side and serged together at 1/2'. No clipping and notching needed.

    

The only thing I changed was a small sway back adjustment to take care of the wrinkles at the lower back, I had in the previous version. Wearing heels changes our postures and the fit of garments. 

All in all I am happy with the results. The fabric wrinkles a bit, but so does life, so I don't really care about that. Wearing cotton is so much more pleasant than polyester, that a bit of ironing from time to time is a small price to pay. If you would like to try out this pattern in cotton too, I would suggest getting something with a 5 % of Lycra added or underlining the dress to help the seams be a bit stronger. Lining won't do the difference in this case. 

I am mostly working on my own designs in my spear time, and can't keep up with the blogo-sphere on all the new patterns that enter the market. Since my sewing time is limited and needs to be focused on my particular goals, I don't review as much patterns as others. But I do have a soft spot for Gertie's patterns, since I feel I "grew up" with her blog. I am sentimental like that. So this will be my sewing challenge. I will make one pattern from her book every month, and review it- sewing-wise for the blog-world. I would love other people to join this challenge, so I made a little badge that I will share in the next post. I also opened a flickr group that will help us organize all the wonderful projects made from Gertie's books and patterns. I love her patterns since they are advanced and vintage inspired, so they always teach me something new. 

The group is named Gertie's New Book(s) For Better Sewing & Butterick Patterns since I want it to be an easy reference for all of her patterns. I am going to publish all the patterns that I made and plan to in the following week. Please join and follow along. 

Now have you guessed already where did we take these pictures? That's right, the famous Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, we dropped by on our last day of the visit. The magic pool is only open to the guests of the hotel (perhaps next time..:) but you can come up and enjoy the view from one of the towers. Can you tell I was trying my Dynasty act?

ביי חברים. בקרוב הרבה חדשות בעברית :)

The White Holidays - בחג לבשי לבן

לפני קצת יותר משנה, כשרק פתחתי את הבלוג, תפרתי את השמלה הזו. קראתי לה שמלת הקיץ האיטלקי שלי, וסיפרתי על התהליך כאן. מאז לבשתי אותה בכמה הזדמנויות, אבל ביננו היא בעיקר שייכת לחגים של ספטמבר. 

את השל הזה מצאתי בשוק ביפו לא מזמן. המוטיביים הרוסיים עושים לי טוב והגיע זמן שנלבש אותם בגאווה. מה שנפלא בחזרתו של הפולק לעולם האופנה שהוא מחזיר עימו את ההתעניינות במלאכות יד המסורתיות , שתופסות את מקום הכבוד המיועד להן (כדוגמא בקולקציות של ולנטינו, אוליאנה סרגיינקו ואוסקר דה לה רנטה)  ומה שעוד יותר נפלא, יותר ויותר אנשים בעולם לומדים אותן מחדש. מאז שכתבתי על זה (כאן) הענין שלי רק הלך והתעמק. בנתיים רק לבשתי מטפחת, אך בזמני הפנוי אני רוקמת חורזת ו"טולאת", ובכלל לומדת כל מה שרק אפשר על התחום הנפלא הזה. 

הדבר הכי יפה שקרה בחג הזה הוא שאימא שלי התארחה אצלנו וסוף סוף, ואחרי כמעט שנתיים שאני מחכה לזה- אמרה שאני עושה דברים ממש יפים. וואללה- אפילו היתה שמחה שאתפור משהו בשבילה. אני חושבת שהיא פחדה לפרגן לפני כן, כדי שלא אסטה מ"המסלול". המסלול הזה, אתם מכירים אותו, שמוביל למוות..:) בכל מקרה, מסתבר שממש היתי זקוקה לאישור שלה. כמה שאני רכרוכית מבפנים. פיכסה

My End Of Summer Dress - השמלה של סוף הקיץ

הקיץ עבר בעבודה מול מחשב, עם רגעים קצרים של סיפוק כאשר גלגלתי את הכיסא שלי לצד השני של החדר ותפרתי משהו. גיליתי שבמקום להלחם בחשק שלי ליצור, "עד שאסיים את כל הדברים החשובים", דוקא לשלב את התפירה בין לבין לעבודה האינטלקטואלית עזר לי והמחשבות זרמו באופן קל יותר. 

The summer passed with me mostly working on the computer, with a few moments of grace when I rolled my chair to the other side of the room and sewn something. I found that instead of fighting the desire to sew "until I finish all the important stuff", letting my self make things actually helped me creatively in other spheres as well.

 לכתוב בלוג אופנה שבו אני תופרת את כל מה שאני לובשת לא פשוט. הכי מסובך זה למצוא זמן ומצב רוח מתאים לצלם ולהצטלם. כשאנו יוצאים אני תמיד מוכנה בשניה האחרונה (ומתאפרת באוטו), ולהתלבש במיוחד בשביל להצטלם נראה לי קצת מוזר.. לשמחתי בסוף הקיץ הוזמנו לפסטיבל קולנוע בסינגפור, והחלטנו לשלב את הנסיעה עם ביקור קצר בתאילנד לכבוד היומולדת שלי. התמונות האלה צולמו בקו פי פי, שאכן התגלה כגן עדן קטן עלי אדמות. מדהים איך קצת שמש, מים, אויר ומנוחה יכולים לעשות את הגוף והנפש מאושרים. כמובן שקצת מסאג' תאילנדי גם לא מזיק אף פעם.. 

One of the hardest parts of writing a fashion - sewing blog for me is finding the time and the right mood to take the photos. I am always late when we go out, and dressing up for no other reason than a photo-shoot feels too self-indulgent .:) Luckily we were invited to Singapore at the end of the summer for my husband's movie, and decided to add a little trip to Thailand on the way, for my birthday. These photos were taken at Koh Phi Phi, which actually turned out being a little piece of heaven. It is amazing what a little sun, sea, air and rest will do to your body and soul. 

המזוודה שלי הורכבה כמעט כולה מפריטים מעשה ידיי, וניסינו לנצל את הנופים היפים גם כרקע לצילום של ה"יצירות" האחרונות שלי. השמלה הזו מכותנה הודית (שקניתי דוקא בארץ) משלבת בצורה מושלמת בעיני בין הקיץ לסתיו, ולכן אולי מדברת אלי, ילידת סוף אוגוסט, במיוחד.. 

My suitcase was mostly filled with handmade garments and we tried to take advantage of some of the beautiful views on the way as a background for them. This dress, made of an Indian cotton, combines the lightness of summer with the colors of fall, making it the perfect end of summer dress. 

 את השמלה עיצבתי בהשראת שנות ה60 המאוחרות, שלצד שמלות מיני שובבות וילדותיות גם היו מאופיינות בשמלות מקסי מחויטות. החלק העליון מורכב מגזרת פרינסס המלווה את מיתרי הגוף, לה הוספתי מפתח סירה בצוואר וV עמוק בגב, והחצאית היא בגזרת A עם כיסים חמודים בתוך התפרים הצדדיים. הבד היה דק למדי ולכן תמכתי בו ממתחת עם כותנה לבנה ונושמת.

I designed this dress inspired by the 60's maxi dresses. The bodice is a fitted princess cut, to which I added a boat neck and a deep V opening in the back. The skirt is a long A line with two comfy side pockets. Since the fabric was on the thin side, I underlined it with some breathable cotton.

אני מרגישה בה.. מאוד קולית, אפשר להגיד. ולמרות שאת הגזרה הזו אפשר בקלות להפוך לשמלת ערב, זו בעיני שמלת בין הערביים המושלמת. בשנות ה60 היא יכלה להיקרא - שמלת המארחת, משהו יפה אך גם נינוח שאת זורקת על עצמך כשאת מזמינה אנשים לארוחת ערב אצלך בבית.

This dress make me feel .. cool, I might say. And even though this pattern can be easily turned into an evening dress, this fabric is more of a late afternoon dress. In the 60's they'd call it the hostess dress, as it is perfect for throwing on your self when you invited some friends for dinner. The easygoing 60's vibe is very Madmen season 6'sh, as I mentioned on my instagram first time I wore it.

נכון שאומרים שכל הקמטים והצלקות שלנו מספרים את הסיפור שלנו? אז את הצלקת הזו על היד קיבלתי תוך כדי גיהוץ של שמלה, כמעט לפני שנה, ואני אכן גאה בה. כל אחד והספורט האתגרי שלו.. :)

You know how they say that our scars and wrinkles tell our stories? Well I got this scar from steam pressing a dress over a year ago, and I am pretty proud of it. To each his own adventurous sport. :)

האי גרם לי לחשוב על הטבע שוב. משהו באופן הבלתי אמצעי שבו את פוגשת את הטבע שם, פתאום מחזיר לך את ההתפעלות הילדותית הזו מכל מיני תופעות (כמו גאות ושפל.. מישהו מבין את זה?) שבגילנו אולי כבר לוקחים כמובן מאליו. למען האמת יש לי כל כך הרבה רשמים מהטיול שאני עדיין ״מעכלת״, שאצטרך לספר אותם בהמשכים. חזרתי עם תחושה של עושר, לא חומרי (למרות שגם זה לא היה מזיק) אלא תרבותי וחוויתי. הידיים שלי בוערות לעשות דברים שוב, כל כך הרבה השראה קיבלתי.

The island made me feel connected to the nature again. Something about being outside of your comfort zone, a part of a beautiful place like that makes you think about the wonders of life again, and you feel the same sense of wonder, as once as a child.

I am still "digesting" this trip, that was very rich sensually and I will probably need to talk about my experiences during a few posts. My hands are itching to make things again, so much inspiration I brought back.

This has been an unforgettable birthday and I have to thank my beloved for giving me this experience and a also such a wonderful photo session, to remember it.

Mad Men Challenge - Emerald And Burgundy Joan Inspired Dresses

שלום קוראים וקוראות יקרות! החיים מלאים אתגרים והכי טוב כשאלו קשורים לתפירה (או כל סוג יצירה)

Hello Dear Readers! 

These have been some crazy couple of weeks.. Lot's of personal things happened but since they are a bit sad, I will spare you the details for now. As far as sewing goes, here are my entries for Julia Bobbin's Mad Men Challenge. The pattern is my own, self drafted, and inspired by two evening dresses of Joan. They are almost the same, except some design details and finishing. Both have been sewn using a lot of couture elements (underlining, catch stitching, inner support) but that is not the greatest thing about them. The real thing I am proud of is that you are looking at two complete "Make Do and Mend" garments. Both are recycled items from my travels in India about 15 years ago. Does that make them vintage? :)

היו לי כמה שבועות מטורפים לגמרי, לצערי עם כמה בשורות עצובות, אבל אני אשמור אתכם מזה בשלב זה. אני לא ממש מתה על הפרדה מוחלטת בין האישי ומה ששייך לבלוג, אבל עדיין לא עליתי על דרך המלך לשילוב. אני הרי רוצה להלהיב נשים ישראליות אינטלגנטיות בדבר התפירה, אז מה שייך פה הצד העצוב של החיים?
בכל מקרה, אם את קוראות את הבלוג הזה כבר כמה זמן, אתן בטח כבר מכירות את נושא האתגרים התפירתיים. זו שנה שניה שמתקיים לו הMad Men Challenge, כאילו אני זקוקה לתמריץ בשביל לתפור בסגנון זה.. אבל בכל זאת ניסיתי לאתגר את עצמי והצלחתי, אני חושבת. מעבר לעיצובים וגזרות - מעשה ידיי, מדובר בשתי שמלות ערב העשויות על טהרת המחזור. הירוקה היא סרי ישן שהבאתי איתי מהודו לפני כ15 שנה (בחלק הזה אני מקללת ברוסית ביני לבין עצמי) והבורדו היא חיים חדשים שנתתי לחצאית טיבטית מאותו הטיול. מענין, האם זה הופך אותן לוינטאז'?

Have you seen this image of Joan? It's pretty rare out there in the web, and that's cause it's taken from a promo shot to one of the season's openings (if there's a true madmen devotee here, she'd know which one). My dress is made from an old Indian sari (that mom tried to throw out many times..). It was a challenge to cut around the holes, but the beautiful emerald silk was worth it. The dress is underlined with grey poly-organza (I kept this a low budget project) and lined with green satin (from sheets I have brought that time from India too). Can you believe I once slept in satin sheets? I must have thought I was Maharajah. 

השמלה הירוקה עוצבה בהשראת התמונה הזו של מיס הולווי, הלקוחה מאיזה פרומו לא פופולרי במיוחד ברשת. בכלל מרבית השמלות הכי מדהימות של ג'ואן הן מהפרומואים, אנ לא מבינה למה קריסטינה הנדריקס לא לוקחת אותן הביתה או לפחות מבקשת ממעצבי התלבושות שישחזרו לה אותן בכמה העתקים. זה מה שמרלין מונרו היתה עושה בזמנה, היא היתה דורשת לקבל את השמלה מהסט ואז לוקחת אותה לחייט שישחזר אותה בכמה צבעים ובדים שונים. ( שימו לב, דברי חוכמה נדירים פה בין התמונות..) 

Anyway the fashion fabric is a bit transparent, and the layers give the silk some depth. The bodice is fitted, with a front seam (from what I could tell, same as Joan's dress) and has an extended gathered shoulder line, that can be worn on and off the shoulder. Skirt ends a bit below the knee, and has a back slit. It has a back lapped zipper and some hook and eye inner support (see photos below). I wont lie, I am very proud of it.

כמה מילים על התפירה. נתחיל מהעניין של המחזור. המחשבה שעומדת מאחורי הפרויקטים האלה היא להחזיר לחיינו קצת מאווירת הצנע של אמצע מאה קודמת - (חפשו את make do and mend כדי ללמוד על כך עוד, או שצפו בפרק השלישי של הsewing bee הבריטית. אם אתן לא יודעות במה מדובר כנראה שאתן לא עוקבות אחרי בפייסבוק וחבל :)) בשתי מילים, המלחמה אילצה את הנשים להיות מאוד יצירתיות בתפירתן. ברור שכולן כמעט ידעו לתפור (ולסרוג!), וכך דאגו להראות אופנתיות ולהלביש את משפחתן, אך בתקופה הקשה הזו, כשכל הגברים הלכו למלחמה ולא היה כסף לקנות בדים, המושג של "להכין יש מאין" (תרגום חופשי שלי) הפך להיות פופולרי מאין כמותו. נשים הכינו שמלות ממפות שולחן, חצאיות טוויד מתוך מכנסיים של בעליהן ואפילו ג'קטים מחויטים ונשיים מאלו של הגברים. הממשלה תמכה ופרסמה ספרונים ועלונים שיתנו לנשים רעיונות ל-DIY של תקופת המלחמה. יש לי את אחד מהספרונים המקסימים האלה בבית, הוא מלמד איך לתקן בגדים ולהיות יצירתית בכל הנוגע לחומרים (כזה).

  

The burgundy dress was inspired by this image of Joan. She wore that gorgeous evening dress to have dinner with her asshole husband, remember? For the fabric I cut an old Tibetan wrap skirt of mine. I admit that I hate throwing things out, cause I always end up wishing I haven't! I thought of making pillow covers out of this one, but when I saw Joan's dress, I had an idea of using is as a wearable muslin. Well it turned out to be a dress on it's own, underlined with nude cotton, this linen-silk mix (I am totally guessing here) looks really nice. I tried it in an above the ankle length, and I really like it.. 

מעבר למחזור של הבדים, שתי השמלות נעשו על טהרת התפירה העלית (טוב, כמעט. על כך בפוסטים הבאים). אחרי שהבנתי איך אני רוצה שהגזרה תראה, גזרתי קודם את הבטנה (זו השכבה הפנימית יותר של הבטנה, שנקאת באנגלית - underlining, והיא נתפרת כשכבה אחת עם הבד החיצוני) ואז את הבד. השכבה הפנימית נותנת חוזק ותמיכה לבגד, ובמקרה של השמלה הירוקה גם משחק גוונים מעניין. שמלת הבורדו היתה אמורה להיות דגם נסיוני, אבל היא נראתה כ"כ טוב שזכתה לקיום משל עצמה. לירוקה הוספתי גם בטנת סאטן נעימה, שגם היא, תאמינו או לא נעשתה מסדינים ישנים שהבאתי מאותו הטיול בהודו. אני לא מאמינה שפעם ישנתי בתוך סדיני סאטן ירוקים. בטח חשבתי שאני מהרג'ה.

This was actually the first version of the pattern, and how I envisioned Joan would look standing. Later I found a detailed image of that dress and it turns out it is actually a wrap dress, with a bit of sarong type skirt. I am making it too (found an even more precise fabric while visiting my old closet, in a form of a Tibetan dress. I really can't believe I actually wore stuff like that once. I was a total hippy.)

הירוקה עשויה ממשי בגוון אמרלד , והבורגונדי - אני לא יודעת מה זה הבד הזה, אבל הוא נראה כמו תערבות בין משי פראי לבין פשתן או כותנה. מרקם מעניין, ראו למטה. עשיתי כמה שינוים עיצוביים בין הגזרות, שהעיקריים בהן הן האורך (תגידו, קוראות אופנתיות שכמוכן, מה אתן אומרות על אורך מעל לקרסול? ) ומיקום הרוכסן. 

Here it is with a vintage brooch. I tried it on with a red rose, it also looks cool, more Spanish in nature..:) The couture insides look like this. The dress is not lined, but it's fine, I think many times underlining is enough. There will be a detailed post on that soon. 

שני הרוכסנים נתמכים מבפנים ע"י החברים האלה, איך קוראים להם בעברית? וו ועין? (גוגל טרנסלייטור הבוגדני). בגלל שהשמלה צמודה למדי בחלק העליון, הרוכסנים עובדים קצת כמו מחוך (עדין ביותר) ומחזיקים צורה.

 I made a side invisible zipper for the burgundy dress, since it's very fitted there is a waist stay and some hook and eyes to help the zipper. For the green on I used a cotton hook and eye tape I cut and sewn behind the lapped zipper in the back. All the seams are overclocked and catch-stitched to the underlining to help them lay flat. 

A few tips I have to share from this challenge:

1. Be creative and resourceful! If you don't have the right fabric, don't run and buy it, maybe it's hiding in your own closet. The satisfaction is beyond imagination and these old clothes will thank you (seen "toy story"?) and so will the environment.

2. Don't be afraid to make your own patterns. Study the design elements, think how do you imagine the pattern would look like and use your sloper or an old pattern that fits well to experiment flat pattern making. Use a muslin and a mannequin to drape if you prefer it.

3. Try underlining instead of lining. The process is faster - both layers are sewn at the same time and it's easier to adapt the size in case you loose or add some inches to your figure.

4. Sew flat! For the same two reasons - it saves time and you can easily alter the side seams if you'll ever need to. Plus it's easier!

5. It's very hard to take pictures on your own. 

כמה דברים שהיתי רוצה לחלוק איתכן בעקבות הפרויקט הזה:

1. היו יצירתיות ולא צרכניות! אם אין לכן את הבד המתאים, אל תרוצו לקנות, בדקו אולי הוא נמצא בחלק האחורי של ארונכן. עקבו אחרי לוחות הפינטרסט שלי כדי לקבל רעיונות מגניבים לDIY ומחזורים.

2. אל תפחדנה לעשות גזרות משלכן. בסכ"ה מדובר בחתיכת נייר שאמורה אח"כ ליצור צורה תלת מימדית בבד. אם יש לכן גזרה שמתאימה לכן, או שיש לכן ספר שמלמד איך להוציא גזרה- אתן חופשיות להתנסות ולשחק באוות נפשכן. אני מתכננת לכתוב בהמשך על כל מיני דרכים מגניבות להוציא גזרה ויש הרבה:)

3. חשבו יעיל. נסו לתפור בטנה פנימית במקום חיצונית (ראו את הנקודה הזו באנגלית אם זה לא ברור). הדבר חוסך מלא זמן ומאפשר תיקונים מהירים למידה בשלב מאוחר יותר.

4. אל תקשיבו להוראות. מרבית הספרים ילמדו אתכן לתפור קודם את החלק העליון כולו ואז לחבר אותו במותן לחלק התחתון. אני מציעה לכן לנסות לחבר חלק קדמי לאחורי- באמצעות תפרים צדדיים. הדבר חוסך זמן, קל יותר ומאפשר לשנות את המידה של השמלה בקלות, אם אתן כמוני- ומתרחבות או מצרות בהקפים מדי עונה.

5. מאוד קשה להצטלם לבד. 

Thank you Julia Bobbin for making this challenge yet another year:)! Mad Men is my most favorite show (at least fashion wise) and almost all Joan's dresses have to be recreated (especially those in promos..)  So - many more Mad Men challenges to come, hopefully!

טוב, אז נאמר שלום לעת עתה. מקווה שנהניתן (אני יודעת שהקוראות העבריות שלי אכן קוראות את מה שאני כותבת, וזה מאוד מחמם את ליבי), ומי שחדש/ה מוזמן להצטרף לקוראים, אני מנסה לאסוף כאן שבט קטן, בכל זאת.

בעלי נמצא עכשיו בLA, עם הסרט המקסים שלו, אז למי שיש קרובים שם, אולי הם יצליחו לתפוס אותו. הסרט מסיים את הסיבוב שלו בתי הקולנוע בארץ (אני יודעת שלא פרסמתי פה, לא יודעת למה, לפעמים לא נראה לי נכון לערבב את החיים האישיים שלנו פה, אולי זה טעות) אז אם הוא עדיין רץ במקום מסוים, ואתם רוצים לדעת לאיזה בן אדם אני נשואה, חפשו את "איגור ומסע העגורים", של יבגני רומן.

בנתיים שלחתי אותו אתמול למסע קניות בסדקיות הלוס אנג'לסיות, שלמרות המבחר הרב, אולי תשמחו לשמוע שהן נראות ומרגישות כמו אלנבי שלנו. ככה שלא כל דשה של כל שכן ירוק יותר:)

Sewing For Victory 40's Challenge Dress

I present you my Sewing For Victory dress.

שמלת שנות ה40 שלי עבור Sewing For Victory הושלמה.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I used the movie Malena as a reference, for this silhouette. I curled my hear a bit and kept the makeup light for the purpose of the image. 

כפי שהזכרתי בפוסט קודם, השתמשתי בסרט מלנה, כרפרנס לסילואט והשראה. סלסלתי את השיער שלי קצת והתאפרתי באופן קליל יחסית, כדי להתאים לדמות. לא רציתי להפוך למלנה בשלב ב של הסרט, אם אתן מבינות למה אני מתכוונת.

In the spirit of wartime "staple mentality" I had only enough fabric  for a straight skirt (the fabric is rayon). I used this cute vintage Mccall's pattern for the bodice, grading it up two sizes (using this book), and a skirt pattern I drafted a while back for my own body. I use it all the time now, adjusting patterns to my measurements. 

התיחסתי לפרויקט הזה לא רק כניסיון בעיצוב תקופתי, אלא כמסע קטן בזמן. אחד העקרנות המנחים של האופנה של התקופה היה עניין החסכון בבד, ולכן גם לי שני מטר של ויסקוזה (פלוס מטר אחד בצבע אחר לתחתית) היה אמור להספיק. החלק העליון של השמלה מבוסס על גזרת הוינטאז' החמודה הזו, והחלק התחתון על גזרת חצאית ישרה שציירתי לפי מידותי פעם ומאז השתמשתי בה במלא גרסאות. 

The designing was fun, but the best part was the construction. I imagined how women did their sewing in the 40's and followed the same limitations. No serger, no fusible interfacing, no invisible zipper, but yes to side lapped zipper, hand finished hem, a waist stay and self made shoulder pads. This put me in a true zen place. 

כל זה נחמד אך החלק הי כיפי היה התפירה. ניסיתי לדמיין איך הנשים בשנות ה40 תפרו, ולהגביל את העצמי באותה דרך. אז שום אוברלוק, או פליזלין נדבק או רוסכן נסתר. זה שם אותי במקום אמיתי של זן.

I added a little vintage brooch. I think my dress is as cute as Jil Sander's one, if not more. What do you think?

הוספתי סיכת וינטאז' כטאץ' אחרון. מה אתן אומרות יכול לעמוד בתחרות עם השמלה של ג'יל סנדר?  

I've came up with the idea, sewn the dress, took photos (my husband's beautiful work) and posted this post, all the while this little fatty rested in the sun. La vita bela indeed.

 אני חשבתי על רעיון, הוצאתי גזרה, תפרתי, הצטלמתי (בעזרתו המוכשרת של בן זוגי) וכתבתי פוסט - בזמן שהשמנמן הזה נח לו בשמש (כן, ככה הוא ימים שלמים:)). אכן לה ויטה בלה.

Anyway, 40's project done and finished:) I really enjoyed this sew-along, even though I only joined flickr today. I am really bad with all this technology, learning as I go (there are so many platforms..!) I hope it does get easier with time.
What I liked most is the fact Rochelle from Lucky Lucille  added a few more criterias to the sew along besides the fashions. I feel I really time traveled.

For my family the 40's were not the best times, my grandmother spent it fleeing the natzis in the forests and later working hard, far away from home to feed a little boy while grandfather went to war. (Can you imagine? I can't) All their relatives that stayed in Latvia killed meanwhile. So I am not into romanticizing this era too much. But I was thinking that maybe this is somehow what my grandmother would like to have been doing instead, making a pretty dress for her self, in an alternative reality. So I imagined that and dove into a retrospective healing, so to speak.

It's interesting how fashion comes back. We get to enjoy the 50's without necessarily being housewives, and we can enjoy the 40's minus the terrible circumstances. I call it liberating the fashion, how about that?

בסכ"ה נורא נהניתי, ובמיוחד מהעובדה שרשל, יוזמת הפרויקט הקטן הזה הוסיפה כמה תנאים מעבר לעיצוב. הדבר היחיד שהיה לי קשה זה להצטרף לעוד אתר נוסף (flickr הפעם) על מנת לקחת חלק. אני הרבה יותר ברוח שנות ה40, כל הטכנולוגיות החדשות האלה מורכבות לי מדי. גם את טוויטר עדיין לא קלטתי עד הסוף..

רציתי להוסיף נקודה קטנה, או גדולה למעשה, לגבי התקופה הזו - שנות ה40. בקהילת התפירה ואולי במקום מסוים גם בקהילת האופנה נהוג לעשות לה קצת רומנטיזציה ולעתים אף גלוריפיקציה. לי קצת יותר קשה לשכוח מה סבתא שלי באמת עשתה בשנים האלה. לא בדיוק היה לה זמן להשקיע בתלתלים הנכונים בזמן שברחה מהנאצים עם בעל וילד קטן ביערות רוסיה. תוך ימים ספורים הם השאירו את כל רכושם והחליפו את מעט התכשיטים שהיו בכמה שקי מלח. הם עשו את כל הדרך מלטביה לאוזבקיסטן, שם סבתא נשארה לעבוד כדי להאכיל את הדוד שלי בזמן שסבא הלך למלחמה. כמעט כל המשפחה שנשארה בריגה נרצחה. כשחשבתי על זה הרגשתי כמה דברים. א. אשמה- למה? כי את זו אני תמיד מרגישה. אבל אז חשבתי לעצמי שאולי אני עושה עכשיו את מה שסבתא שלי באמת היתה רוצה לעשות בזמנו, בעולם או מציאות אלטרנטיבית. גם היא היתה רוצה לשבת בשקט בערב ולתפור לעצמה שמלה כיפית. אז עשיתי מעין הילינג לאחור. וכשכבר ישבה לתפור או לרקום, היתה עושה את זה עם הידיים האוהבות שלה, ועם הרבה סבלנות, זה בטוח.

בכלל כל העניין של האופנה וההקשר ההיסטורי - תרבותי שלה זה נושא מעניין. אנחנו יכולות להתלהב מעיצובים משנות ה50 מבלי שנהיה עקרות בית בהכרח, ואנחנו יכולות להנות משמלה משנות ה40 ללא הנסיבות הנוראיות. אני קוראת לזה שחרור האופנה מההסיטוריה שלה. מה אתן חושבות?
