The Dress Inspector - Carolina Herrera Pre-Fall 2013 Collection

You know.. I love female designers. I think they are oddly a minority in the fashion business, but most of them make very interesting things. Me, I have a soft spot for Stella McCartney and Carolina Herrera. Stella is playing with the the male inside the woman and Carolina is all about the FEMALE. Just how lovely was the dress she designed for Cristina Hendrick's wedding?

Now this dress, from the Pre-Fall 2013 collection is not letting me go. It's the classic white and blue combination  the interesting cutting and yes, the embroidery. I have been cracking my head how it was made, and decided to let you in on the guessing.

הגיעה העת למשחק האהוב עלי - מנתחת השמלות (שמלות זה שם כולל לכל בגד שאני רוצה להבין איך עשו אותו). טוב, אני ממש אוהבת נשים מעצבות. לדעתי הן במיעוט בעולם האופנה, וזה חבל כי אין כמו נשים אחרות בשביל להבין את הגוף הנשי. החביבות עלי ביותר הן סטלה מקרטני (דוקא על המשחק עם הגבריות) וקרולינה הררה שהולכת על דמות הכי נשית שאפשר. אני לא יודעת אם אפשר היה לעצב שמלת חתונה יותר מקסימה מזו לקריסטינה הנדריקס, אהובתי הנצחית. אבל השמלה שאני רוצה לדבר עליה, היא מהקולקציה האחרונה של הררה, והיא לא נותנת לי מנוח. ההתפעמות שלי קשורה כנראה לשילוב הקלאסי אך לא הנדוש של הכחול עם הלבן, החיתוך המעניין, משחק האור אבל בעיקר בעיקר הרקמה והחרוזים. אני לא מצליחה להבין איך הם עשו את זה ולכן מבקשת את עזרתכן (ו-ם).

אז מה כתוב באתר? כל מה שאמרתי למעלה ועוד פרט מעניין-הבד הוא 90% כותנה ו10% משי. אתם קולטים מה רק 10 % משי יכול לעשות..? מרתק. היא בטח נוחה בטירוף. טוב, לצערנו לא נדע, כי היא נמכרה לגמרי. חבל, כי בדיוק היה לי 3990$ לבזבז.. עוד נקודה מעניינת זה המשחק של האור בחלק האחורי. אני תוהה אם זה רק הזוית או שקרולינה גם שיחקה עם הכיוון של החוט הישר. מה חושבות/ים? Look at this perfect back. There is a beautiful play with the nap of the fabric.. How do you think it was achieved? Is it just the light or is there some different grain involved? The fabric is 90% cotton, 10% silk. Unbelievable.. So much effect with just 10% silk.. (here's a closeup of the back)

 One more beautiful detail is the little bust darts, can you see them, in the center?

עוד פרט מרגש בעיני הם המתפרים הקטנים באיזור החזה. רואים אותם? (עדיין לא למדתי לעשות חצים בפוטושופ..)

But the real magic and what makes this dress so challenging is the embroidery. It is so gently beaded and combined with the flower applique  that it makes me want to scream. I really want to try this at home, but have a feeling that in my hands, the dress won't stay white for long.

אך עם היד על הלב, מה שהכי הכי הכי מהמם בשמלה הזו זו הרקמה. הגדלתי את התמונה במיוחד כדי שנוכל ביחד לחקור את התופעה הזו. מדובר בשילוב של רקמה, חרוזים ואפליקציה. אבל איך? אחרי שהשמלה נתפרה, להכניס אותה לטבעת..? איך היא לא מתלכלת, מתקמטת, האם מעבירים את הדוגמא על הצד החיצוני? כל אלה שאלות שאני רוצה לענות עליהן.. ואז לנסות.
התחלתי ללמוד קצת רקמה בזמני הפנוי.. יש לי עכשיו אייפד, ולמעשה אף פעם לא משעמם לי. כל רגע פנוי הוא הזדמנות ללמוד טכניקה חדשה. כאן מצאתי וידאו קטן שמסביר קצת את השיטה. 

The couture embroidery method is quite different from the home one. I found this video to get an idea how the beading might be done. 

So I was thinking, maybe I can try to make a Herrera inspired dress. I have some navy and white satin cotton, It's not as nice as silk, but has a bit of shine. It also has about 5 % lycra in it, so it might be comfy.. The pattern is not very difficult to recreate, but maybe Simplicity 1803 Project Runway Collection can be used as a base.. (the bodice part). 

אם גם אתן נדלקתן על השמלה, ובא לכן לנסות, אפשר להשתמש בגזרה הזו 1803 של סימפליסיטי לחלק העליון, ולהעביר כמה מתפרים. בעיקרון הגזרה לא מסובכת, וריאציה על פרינסס, ולכן כל האתגר כאן הוא ברקצה. יש לי שני גלילים של סאטן כותנה בצבע לבן ונייבי בבית, זה אמנם לא משי, אבל יש איזה החזר אור.. וגם 5% לייקרה לנוחות. אבל הבעיה עם בד שהוא לא מספיק איכותי, זה שהרקמה יכולה להרוג אותו. מרוב העבודה הלבן יהפוך לשמנת..

The difficult part is of course the beading and the embroidery.  I can't seem to get how to put the finished dress though one an embroidery loop. And how is the design transferred on the white fabric..?

Any of you had an experience with that? What do you think, can be done? 
How about these flowers? I think they might be pieces of silk organza embroidered or appliqued on top of the beading, but I am not sure. Anyone else?

טוב, אם את מבינות ברקמה וחרוזים, או סתם בא לכן לעזור לי לפענח, בבקשה תתשתפו איתי במשחק הניחושים! אני חושבת שהפרחים עשוים אולי מחתיכות דקות של אורגנזה, שמשולבת באפליקציה או רקמה לתוך הצורה הכללית. אבל איך ומתי זה נעשה?

טוב, שיהיה לנו מאי שמח, מה אני אגיד. אני לא משתתפת באתגר של זואי (me made may challenge) אבל כן הולכת לבקר קצת את מלבושיי החודש, רק כדי להבין עד כמה אני לובשת את מה שאני תופרת. יש לי הרגשה שאמצא חסך רציני במלתחת יום יום. כנראה שסאני צדקה כשיזמה את everyday wardrobe project.

How I made not one, not two, but five portrait blouses:)

על איך שתפרתי לא אחת, לא שתיים, אלא חמש חולצות פורטרט :)

In between other projects I am sewing my way through Gertie's book for better sewing. I am trying the old techniques, comparing to the new and others in my books and having a great time. This time I made the portrait blouse, in five different versions.

בין לבין לפרויקטים אחרים אני תופרת את דרכי עם הספר של גרטי. אני מנסה טכניקות ישנות, משווה לחדשות או לעצות מתוך הספרים האחרים שלי ולמען האמת עושה חיים. הפעם עשיתי את חולצת הפורטרט מהספר, בחמש גרסאות שונות.

The pattern, once I made a few changes stayed the same, I just cut it it in different fabrics and experimented with the construction and the finishing techniques. I have noticed in a few projects other sewers have already made from this pattern, that the fit of the blouse was quite tight and the neckline a bit too high. I wanted something that looked more like the original Vogue book for better sewing shape. So I cut the blouse one size larger than me, added length (I used the largest size cutting line for the hem) and I lowered the neckline for about an inch. I added just depth, not width to the front neckline. For he first version, in red rayon (viscose) I left the facings the size the pattern suggested. With the rest I added an inch to the lower edge. I also didn't install a zipper in any of the blouses, and had no trouble getting in and out. I suggest basting one side and trying it on, to see if you'll need a zipper.

הגזרה עצמה, אחרי שעשיתי לה כמה שינוים נותרה זהה, אך גזרתי אותה בכמה בדים שונים ושיחקתי עם טכניקות תפירה וגימור שונות. אחרי שחקרתי קצת את הפרויקטים האחרים שנתפרו מהגזרה הזו, ראיתי שלכולם היא יצאה צמודה מדי ועם פתח גבוה מדי לטעמי. אני רציתי משהו שדומה יותר לגזרה המקורית של הספר של ווג  - Vogue's book for better sewing (אגב גם באוסף שלי). אז גזרתי את החולצה במידה אחת גדולה משלי, הוספתי אורך והעמקתי את המחשוף בבערך שני ס"מ, מבלי לשנות את הרוחב שלו. בגרסה הראשונה, מויסקוזה אדומה, השארתי את רצועות העיבוד כי שהן, בהמשך, כחלק מהנסיון שלי למצוא דרך שישארו בפנים, הוספתי להן כמה ס"מ באורך.

I finished all the seams with my favorite french seams application. In the first version I did the classic - sewing at 3/8 with the wrong sides together, pressing, and cutting the seam allowances short, and the sewing over it at 1/4. This is the basic way to make a french seam and is the least bulkiest. But sometimes some threads still show on the other side, and it is a bit time consuming. So the next blouses's seams were serged first, the least bulkiest setting- 3 thread, spread apart stitches, and then sewn over for a french seam. I love how the blouses look from the inside, and it's so fast.

Now the real challenge of this pattern is the narrow hem finishes. Usually the smaller the sewing area the harder it is to make it right and neat. In the fist red version I did the classic (prior to serger or narrow hem foot technique) . It's the one Gertie suggests in the book, and I learned from Louise Cutting on threads. It includes three rows of stitching, with the final one showing on the outside. All in all I have to say I like it. The only thing to remember is to leave 5/8 un-stitched at the blouse's side seams (securing the the stitches of course) to make a clean hem at the sleeve bottom. In my other variations, using a serger or a narrow hem foot, I also stay stitched the armhole and notched a bit at the bottom, for the curve to roll in nicely. 

כל התפרים גמורים בשיטה הצרפתית- שזהו מעין תפר כפול, המכיל את עצמו, מה שמשאיר את הפנים של הבגד נקי כמו החוץ שלו. האתגר האמיתי בגזרה הזו הוא במכפלות הצרות, שבגרסאות האלה ערכתי מחקר לגבי בערך כל השיטות הקיימות. שלושה תפרים מקופלים, אוברלוק ואז שני קיפולים, רגל מיוחדת לתפר צר במכונה, שילוב בין אוברלוק לבינה ותפר צר באוברלוק. לא אייגע אתכן בהסברים ארוכים, שכתבתי באנגלית, ופשוט אתאר אותן במדריכים הבאים. גם לרצועות עיבוד יש גימורים שונים- זו הראשונה היא הנוסטטלגית ביותר, ככה תראו את רוב הבגדים מפעם, שעשוים בבית גמורים. היום מרבים להשתמש באוברלוק, שאפשר לעשות עימו תפר צר או רחב (החולצה הפרחונית, המנומרת והנקודות), ואני נהניתי גם מתפר מכפלת צר, שנראה חמוד ועדין מאוד (ראו בחולצה השחורה).  

In this version I fused some light weight knit interfacing and the seams finished with a pinked edge finish, supported with a row of stay stitching.

The second version is is a floral rayon I had left from my Russian skirt project. 
In this one I serged the seams before french-seaming them. I also serged the bottom and the sleeve edges, before hemming them. Very clean and easy finish, a bit faster and easier to work with than the classic way. I added one inch length to  the facings, and omitted the fusible interfacing here, to keep in light as a feather. 

זה הבד שנשאר לי מהחצאית הרוסיה:) רצועות עיבוד ארוכות יותר, תפרים גמורים באוברלוק ואז מלופפים פנימה למכפלת צרה. גימור נקי וקל יחסית לביצוע. הפנים גמור בתפרים צרפתים, שאני חולה עליהם.

This time I used my narrow hem foot. I like it! It's a bit tricky and needs some practice to make, but once you get it, the hems can look tiny and neat. The sleeve is finished with the narrow hem foot twice. I did only one row of it in the bottom hem, and I even finished the facings this way. P.S. If you ever accidentally cut your fashion fabric after sewing it, there is a creative way to mend - cut a heart shaped fusible interfacing, and turn the problem into a little fun surprise.. :)

גרסה בויסקוזה שחורה. קלילה ואוורירית..ומאוד מחמיאה. התפרים גמורים בעזרת רגל מכפלת צרה של המכונה. צריך סבלנות וזריזות ידיים, אבל התוצאה נחמדה מאוד.

The hem was rolled twice in the machine -

The bottom hem is one row of narrow hemming on the machine -

דרך חמודה לתקן חור קטן בבגד- להדביק פליזלין חתוך בצורת לב ולהפוך את הבעיה להפתעה..

Forth version- in an animal print polyester satin. This one was the hardest one to control, press and shape, but every experience is a lesson. I would love to make this blouse in silk in the future, and for that, the hand must be steady! :)
The bottom hem is made using the Kenneth King method from his book- Cool Couture. It's serged first, then turned on itself twice, and zigzagged in place. It's almost like my method from blouse #2, except for the zigzag. For the sleeves I tried a new combo- serging and then using the narrow hem foot. Also not so bad, a bit easier to hold in. The facing is finished with a serger narrow hem setting (did you know you have one?). A lot of methods to narrow hem out there!

אם אפשר אל תתפרו מפוליאסטר. מבחינתי שכל המחזיקים בו בנחלת בנימין יפשטו רגל. זה סאטן עלק. בסדר, החלצה חמודה ונראית טוב מבצבצת מתחת לקרדיגן או ג'קט רגוע, אבל הבד קשה לשליטה, קשה לגיהוץ לכדי צורה ואם תקראו על זה זה, תחרדו מהדברים הלא טובים שזה עושה לגוף שלנו. בכל מקרה- גימורים- שילוב של אוברלוק צר ומכפלת צרה במכונה. רצועת העיבוד גמורה במכפלת אוברלוק צרה לבדים דקים. גימור שמתאים רק לפנים הבגד, לדעתי.

Last but not least, the blue velvet polka-dot I love this fabric, it's a cotton woven for a velvet effect, and it has the most intense color. It has almost no give, but drapes rather nicely. I made the dart ends a bit wider in the bottom, at it fits well. This one has serged seam allowances  pressed open, and a underlined facing (non fusible support) that is serged in the bottom and graded at the top seam. The hems are made with the invisible hem foot, and they are invisible! I had to work hard on a closeup to show any stitches.

הגרסה האחרונה- בקטיפת כותנה כחולה עם נקודות. בד מקסים, מנחלת בנימין, והיא ממש כיפית. הבד עבה למדי ולכן אי אפשר לעשות בו את התפרים הצרפתים. המכפלות עשויות בעזרת רגל מיוחדת לתפר נסתר, זה עובד נהדר עם בדים "שעירים" כאלה, שמחביאים תפרים. 

So there you have it. I have found a great new spot in the house to take photos of my projects, I hope that make the blogging a bit easier. For me sewing is the easy task, taking good pictures is the hard one. 

סוף סוף מצאתי מקום נחמד בבית לצלם בו. לפעמים התפירה היא החלק הקל יותר בכל העיסוק הזה:)

Do you guys have a perfect narrow hem? How do you feel about the foot versus the vintage technique?

Also, I am still searching for my best answer on keeping the facings in. I play with their length, secure them to shoulders and under-stitch, but I feel there is still more to be done.  What are your tricks?

All in all, I love this pattern, recommend it to everyone, with the suggested above modifications. Next on my plan- wearing and taking pictures of these girls with lots of skirts..Hard life:)

אני נורא נהנית מהשלב הזה של החקירה והלימוד. אולי אם היתי מקשיבה לסביבה שלי, היתי כבר נובלת מזמן - אבל בשביל מה? מה את הולכת לעשות עם זה? אולי תתפרי לי משהו? אולי תפתחי חנות..? אולי תלכי לעבוד בחברת אופנה? תהיהי סטייליסטית? מעצבת אופנה.. תמיד חשבתי את צריכה הלהיות מעצבת פנים.. תלמדי תפירה.. באמת? עם תואר שני? בלה בלה בלה. כולם עם החרדות שלהם. אני נהנית מהדרך, ובנתיים לא מרוויחה ממנה גרוש. נכנסתי לכל זה מתוך געגועים לעבודה עם הידיים, וגם רצון לעשות משהו, ליצור יופי. כן, רציתי לעצב, והתחלתי ללמוד דיגום ותפירה. ככל שנכנסתי לזה יותר, הבנתי כמה התחום עצום ומרתק, וכמה יש עוד ללמוד ולהתפתח. אני נהנית לכתוב, לחלוק עם אחרים, ללמוד וללמד. ואני מתה לראות מה יהיה, בנתיים אני לא רואה באיזה מחלף היציאה החד משמעית. הבן זוג שלי אומר שרק צריך להחליט, אבל הוא גבר, קל לו לדבר. יש לגברים הפרדה הרבה יותר ברורה בין החלק הימני לשמאלי במוח. אני מחכה להבשיל:)  אני מאמינה בכל ליבי באורך חיים אקולוגי, יצרני ויצירתי, שיש בו מקום לצריכה, אך מודעת ומתונה, אמצעי לעוד יותר יצירתיות ויצרנות (פרודוקטיביות), ולא כזו המרוקנת את הנפש. אני מקווה למצוא דרך לשלב את הערכים האלה במה שאני אעשה ואני מקווה שתהיו שם, לצידי כשזה יקרה.

New Blog Tradition! Sunday Blog Recommendations -מסורת חדשה- המלצות יום א

Did I tell you about SewingPatterns.com? No, they are not paying me. Unfortunately. I am starting a new blog tradition, where I'll share some of my recommendations on a regular basis. I love reading stuff like on other blogs, and it's time I join the info circulation. This one is about downloadable patterns, a small step for the pattern companies and a huge step for us- sewing enthusiasts. 

You must all be familiar with BurdaStyle, and the patterns they offer for download on their site, both digitized patterns from the printed issues and their own original designs. I also mentioned here before the German BurdaStyle site, that carries patterns not available on the american one.  

But the site I use and love most is SewingPatterns.com.

This is a great internet shop that carries all the major brand patterns (in one place) and lots of small companies too. Every few weeks one or more companies goes on sale and you can buy both paper and downloadable patterns for great prices. This is especially useful for non US residents, since you can buy and instantly download any of the big companies patterns, and just print them on your home printer. Imagine how much fun it is to choose a project and start working on it on the same day. I am only shopping there when they have sales, and rarely spend more than 4$ on a pattern. And- most importantly- NO SHIPPING CHARGES. Yes you print the pattern and it takes some time to assemble it together, but I always trace off my paper patterns any way, so it takes about the same time. No biggy.

האמת שאני לא בטוחה עד כמה תופרים ותופרות יש לנו כבר בשלב הזה, מדי פעם אני מקבלת מכתבים עם שאלות ותגובות חמות, אז אני מאמינה שכדאי להמשיך, אולי עוד חברה ידבקו. זו אכן מחלה מדבקת, מגפה אפילו, אבל טובה ובריאה מאוד.

אז אני מתחילה מסורת חדשה בבלוג, מדי פעם בימי ראשון, סתם כי היום יום ראשון, אפרסם כמה המלצות משלי לעולם התפירה ואני מקווה שתצטרפו אלי ותגיבו בלינקים מגניבים משלכם. מעבר לכך אני מקווה שמי שקוראת ומתלבטת אם יש לה בכלל חוש כלשהו בידיים, תקח צעד- ותוריד איזו גזרה קלה, תתחיל לתפור ותספר לי על זה.

לכן באמת את ההמלצה הראשונה שלי אתן לאתר גזרות מעולה, שמאז שגיליתי אותו כמעט הפסקתי לקנות גזרות נייר ולשלם על משלוח לא זול מארה"ב- SewingPatterns.com. באתר תמצאו את כל החברות הגדולות של גזרות התפירה וגם לא מעט קטנות. יש לי רשימה שלמה של אתרים שבהם נמכרות גזרות בלשונית links למעלה, אבל מה שמיוחד באתר הזה- הוא א. המבצעים התכופים שהם עורכים וב. האפשרות להוריד ולהדפיס במקום את מרבית הגזרות. עבורנו, שלא גרים בארה"ב החיסכון בעלות המשלוח הוא משמעותי. 

עכשיו למשל יש מבצע מעולה - 50% הנחה על כל גזרות בורדה (מעטפה- גזרות אחרות מהמגזין) מסדרת אביב החדשה. בורדה הוסיפו עשרות גזרות מקסימות חדשות שממש כדאי להעיף מבט.כאן אספתי לכן כמה לדוגמא. 

על כל גזרה רשומה רמת הקושי שלה והיא מגיעה עם הוראות תפירה באנגלית (ועוד כמה שפות). אתן לא מבינות עד כמה קלה להרכבה למשל הגזרה השניה, שמשחזרת את שמלת הפלא של סטלה מקרטני.. שתי חתיכות ג'רזי, אוברלוק ושעה של תפירה.

Pattern Review: The Red Wiggle Dress - Gertie's New Book For Better Sewing  

Pattern Description: from the book- "Here is a dress that's meant to show off your curves, yet you'll still be office appropriate  The sheath style, kimono sleeves, boat-neck front, and a V-neck back are all borrowed from a time when work attire was a lot more exiting than today.." I made this version to wear to our friend's wedding in Paris, so it was upgraded into a Joan Holloway.  I think Joan would actually easily wear this one to work too, maybe just for a good enough reason .. :)

Pattern Sizing: I am size 8 (bust)-10 (hips) in Gertie's chart (yes, and me like it)).
Actually the fact we have a similar body shape helped a lot, since the pattern almost did not require any fitting adjustments. I took off about half an inch length in the waist, and add a bit more ease in the belly area (midway between the waist and the hips).

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done with it? 

Yes it did. I was pretty amazed to try the dress for the first time, cause I haven't made a muslin. I guess the fact it's very fitted makes you see the shape right away. 

Were the instructions easy to follow? 

Yes, mostly. At first I got a bit stressed out since I only found some pattern pieces on a page. The usual story with me- missing the small print. Most of the patterns are printed out on a few sheets, and it says which in a little box on the garment page, under supplies. 
Other than that the instruction worked for me almost all the way through. I used Gertie's blog tutorial with for a more detailed gussets instructions (it has bigger pictures), but it was only since it was my first time doing that. I made the dress in the second version already and didn't even need the instructions anymore. 
I did a little change there- didn't feel the need to transfer the stitching lines to the right side, i just pined the organza there, just around the lines and stitched on the wrong sides (I think that's also Gertie's technique from the Starlet Suit Jacket course, she used on bound button holes)
One thing I really missed here were some instructions on the lining. I could not find any reference else where to making a lining for a dress with underarm gussets. Since I didn't believe you have to make the whole organza strip of fabric-gusset procedure again on the lining, I just left the sleeves unlined for this version. 

If anybody knows what to do with the lining in this case- please let me know:), I finished the second version and it's still unlined..

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? 

Well that's easy- I love the pattern, the fit is "mine", this is a classic Kimono sleeve, that can be used over and over in many variations.. Whats not to like? :) 

Fabric Used: Red wool crepe I brought back from Toronto. I had 2 yards, but it was enough, may be cause I'm a bit shorter than Gertie. I lined it with some satin quality and a bit stretchy fabric, that feels like rayon. The stretch makes the lining more comfortable to wear, and the satin feels pleasant against the skin.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: 
*** For this version I changed the neck line into a scoop neck, for a more evening look. This was easy (I just followed the new line of the front bodice neckline to draw the new facing. BUT (And Gertie talks about that in the book) if you do that- be sure to STABILIZE the neckline seam with some good organza stripes or a ready made stabilizer.  It is not enough just to make a stabilizing row of stitching  I did that and had to fight the gaping quiet a lot later. With my second version (soon to be posted) I did follow the more strict instructions and it worked.

Would you sew it again? 
Hell yeah, already did. Post about it soon.

Would you recommend it to others? 
Yes definitely, if you like this style.

I have to say a few words about this lovely blogger, that I feel so grateful to. As strange as it sounds to me now, there was a time in my life when I was pursuing  this hobby of mine  ALL BY MY SELF, not aware of the the internet sewing community. My knowledge came mostly from reading old fashion books and collecting vintage patterns and sewing books (in any language I could put my hands on). I loved my interest but mostly felt a bit alone..:(

Stumbling across Gertie's blog was a big breakthrough for me. I was amazed to see another person so passionate about an interest similar to mine. She was smart and funny and feminist and talked about sewing with great enthusiasm and intention to detail. Through her blog I discovered many other wonderful "sewing enthusiasts" and decided to open my own blog, to be able to communicate  share ideas with the English and the Hebrew speaking folks out there. Meanwhile reading Gertie's blog and taking her classes on Craftsy has become a custom activity, so of course when her book was released I quickly pre-ordered my copy and waited patiently for it to arrive. 

The book was everything I have expected. Gretchen has turned all her long harvested work over the years of writing the blog into accessible knowledge in a hard and (extremely cute) copy. In other words, for those of you cracking their heads alone- how to manage sewing those vintage pattern of yours or execute some of the inspired images in your head (as I used to) - this is the book for you. It has all the needed techniques in one place, and if you'll  need a bit more elaboration, just search the same subject in the Gertie's blog. 


I have read some critique about Gertie's book, mostly being around the fitting issues that people noticed in the photographs. I however totally adored that, since it showed once again that Gertie is HUMAN and can gain a little weight when she sits all day and works on her book (I did working on my thesis!) and that kind of made the book even dearer to me. I love seeing some curves on a model, I miss it a lot in the fashion world. It actually had a therapeutic value for me as a woman living in a skinny-model obsessed world.. 
The fact that I share a similar body shape with Gretchen also really helped. She based the patterns on her own and a pretty prevalent female shape, and I've noticed that I almost didn't need to make any fitting adjustments, beside length. I have worked with many pattern companies in the past and the fitting is always a big issue.
