The RTW Version of Gertie's Wiggle Dress - Fall For Cotton

This is my third version of Gertie's wiggle dress, that is also one of my entries for Fall For Cotton. I bought this grey and white print cotton this summer and thought it would be interesting to make something elegant out of it. I usually get ideas from fabric, putting it against my skin, playing with the drape and seeing what does it want to become. Well this one wanted to be a fitted dress, what are you gonna do.

שלום קוראים יקרים. מה שלומכם? הפוסט היום באנגלית- והוא עוסק בגרסה נוספת לשמלה של גרטי שתפרתי לאחרונה. אין לי הרבה זמן להתעסק בתפירה כשלעצמה, אבל מהגזרות של גרטי אני תמיד נהנית ולומדת משהו. הפעם רציתי להתנסות בתפירה בסגנון RTW, דוקא ללא כל העבודה הפנימית והתפרים הידניים שאני בד"כ כה אוהבת, אלא כמו שקונים ברשתות. הבד הוא כותנה מקהירי בדים, מהקיץ והוא זה שהכתיב לי מה הוא רוצה להיות. בד"כ אני מתחילה מהבד, מניחה אותו אל מול עורי, בודקת איך הוא נופל ושואלת מה הוא היה רוצה להיות. זה רצה להיות שמלה אלגנטית, אפילו שהוא "רק" כותנה תאילנדית. אני כ"כ אוהבת כותנה, שתתקמט כמה שהיא רוצה, זה שווה את זה.

I thought fine, you'll be a dress, but I want to experiment with the sewing techniques. I bought a RTW dress (omg, right?)  earlier this summer and was pleasantly surprised with how light it was. Drapey viscose (rayon) was unlined and all finished with a serger inside. I decided I need to try that, for once. What was mostly interesting  was that the princess seams were unnotched, and the seams where not pressed open. I decided to make Gertie's wiggle dress again, because the pattern was already traced, fit checked and the construction clear. To make the seams lay flat I pressed them to one side and serged together at 1/2'. No clipping and notching needed.

    

The only thing I changed was a small sway back adjustment to take care of the wrinkles at the lower back, I had in the previous version. Wearing heels changes our postures and the fit of garments. 

All in all I am happy with the results. The fabric wrinkles a bit, but so does life, so I don't really care about that. Wearing cotton is so much more pleasant than polyester, that a bit of ironing from time to time is a small price to pay. If you would like to try out this pattern in cotton too, I would suggest getting something with a 5 % of Lycra added or underlining the dress to help the seams be a bit stronger. Lining won't do the difference in this case. 

I am mostly working on my own designs in my spear time, and can't keep up with the blogo-sphere on all the new patterns that enter the market. Since my sewing time is limited and needs to be focused on my particular goals, I don't review as much patterns as others. But I do have a soft spot for Gertie's patterns, since I feel I "grew up" with her blog. I am sentimental like that. So this will be my sewing challenge. I will make one pattern from her book every month, and review it- sewing-wise for the blog-world. I would love other people to join this challenge, so I made a little badge that I will share in the next post. I also opened a flickr group that will help us organize all the wonderful projects made from Gertie's books and patterns. I love her patterns since they are advanced and vintage inspired, so they always teach me something new. 

The group is named Gertie's New Book(s) For Better Sewing & Butterick Patterns since I want it to be an easy reference for all of her patterns. I am going to publish all the patterns that I made and plan to in the following week. Please join and follow along. 

Now have you guessed already where did we take these pictures? That's right, the famous Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, we dropped by on our last day of the visit. The magic pool is only open to the guests of the hotel (perhaps next time..:) but you can come up and enjoy the view from one of the towers. Can you tell I was trying my Dynasty act?

Mad Men Challenge - Emerald And Burgundy Joan Inspired Dresses

These have been some crazy couple of weeks.. Lot's of personal things happened but since they are a bit sad, I will spare you the details for now. As far as sewing goes, here are my entries for Julia Bobbin's Mad Men Challenge. The pattern is my own, self drafted, and inspired by two evening dresses of Joan. They are almost the same, except some design details and finishing. Both have been sewn using a lot of couture elements (underlining, catch stitching, inner support) but that is not the greatest thing about them. The real thing I am proud of is that you are looking at two complete "Make Do and Mend" garments. Both are recycled items from my travels in India about 15 years ago. Does that make them vintage? :)

היו לי כמה שבועות מטורפים לגמרי, לצערי עם כמה בשורות עצובות, אבל אני אשמור אתכם מזה בשלב זה. אני לא ממש מתה על הפרדה מוחלטת בין האישי ומה ששייך לבלוג, אבל עדיין לא עליתי על דרך המלך לשילוב. אני הרי רוצה להלהיב נשים ישראליות אינטלגנטיות בדבר התפירה, אז מה שייך פה הצד העצוב של החיים?
בכל מקרה, אם את קוראות את הבלוג הזה כבר כמה זמן, אתן בטח כבר מכירות את נושא האתגרים התפירתיים. זו שנה שניה שמתקיים לו הMad Men Challenge, כאילו אני זקוקה לתמריץ בשביל לתפור בסגנון זה.. אבל בכל זאת ניסיתי לאתגר את עצמי והצלחתי, אני חושבת. מעבר לעיצובים וגזרות - מעשה ידיי, מדובר בשתי שמלות ערב העשויות על טהרת המחזור. הירוקה היא סרי ישן שהבאתי איתי מהודו לפני כ15 שנה (בחלק הזה אני מקללת ברוסית ביני לבין עצמי) והבורדו היא חיים חדשים שנתתי לחצאית טיבטית מאותו הטיול. מענין, האם זה הופך אותן לוינטאז'?

Have you seen this image of Joan? It's pretty rare out there in the web, and that's cause it's taken from a promo shot to one of the season's openings (if there's a true madmen devotee here, she'd know which one). My dress is made from an old Indian sari (that mom tried to throw out many times..). It was a challenge to cut around the holes, but the beautiful emerald silk was worth it. The dress is underlined with grey poly-organza (I kept this a low budget project) and lined with green satin (from sheets I have brought that time from India too). Can you believe I once slept in satin sheets? I must have thought I was Maharajah. 

השמלה הירוקה עוצבה בהשראת התמונה הזו של מיס הולווי, הלקוחה מאיזה פרומו לא פופולרי במיוחד ברשת. בכלל מרבית השמלות הכי מדהימות של ג'ואן הן מהפרומואים, אנ לא מבינה למה קריסטינה הנדריקס לא לוקחת אותן הביתה או לפחות מבקשת ממעצבי התלבושות שישחזרו לה אותן בכמה העתקים. זה מה שמרלין מונרו היתה עושה בזמנה, היא היתה דורשת לקבל את השמלה מהסט ואז לוקחת אותה לחייט שישחזר אותה בכמה צבעים ובדים שונים. ( שימו לב, דברי חוכמה נדירים פה בין התמונות..) 

Anyway the fashion fabric is a bit transparent, and the layers give the silk some depth. The bodice is fitted, with a front seam (from what I could tell, same as Joan's dress) and has an extended gathered shoulder line, that can be worn on and off the shoulder. Skirt ends a bit below the knee, and has a back slit. It has a back lapped zipper and some hook and eye inner support (see photos below). I wont lie, I am very proud of it.

כמה מילים על התפירה. נתחיל מהעניין של המחזור. המחשבה שעומדת מאחורי הפרויקטים האלה היא להחזיר לחיינו קצת מאווירת הצנע של אמצע מאה קודמת - (חפשו את make do and mend כדי ללמוד על כך עוד, או שצפו בפרק השלישי של הsewing bee הבריטית. אם אתן לא יודעות במה מדובר כנראה שאתן לא עוקבות אחרי בפייסבוק וחבל :)) בשתי מילים, המלחמה אילצה את הנשים להיות מאוד יצירתיות בתפירתן. ברור שכולן כמעט ידעו לתפור (ולסרוג!), וכך דאגו להראות אופנתיות ולהלביש את משפחתן, אך בתקופה הקשה הזו, כשכל הגברים הלכו למלחמה ולא היה כסף לקנות בדים, המושג של "להכין יש מאין" (תרגום חופשי שלי) הפך להיות פופולרי מאין כמותו. נשים הכינו שמלות ממפות שולחן, חצאיות טוויד מתוך מכנסיים של בעליהן ואפילו ג'קטים מחויטים ונשיים מאלו של הגברים. הממשלה תמכה ופרסמה ספרונים ועלונים שיתנו לנשים רעיונות ל-DIY של תקופת המלחמה. יש לי את אחד מהספרונים המקסימים האלה בבית, הוא מלמד איך לתקן בגדים ולהיות יצירתית בכל הנוגע לחומרים (כזה).

  

The burgundy dress was inspired by this image of Joan. She wore that gorgeous evening dress to have dinner with her asshole husband, remember? For the fabric I cut an old Tibetan wrap skirt of mine. I admit that I hate throwing things out, cause I always end up wishing I haven't! I thought of making pillow covers out of this one, but when I saw Joan's dress, I had an idea of using is as a wearable muslin. Well it turned out to be a dress on it's own, underlined with nude cotton, this linen-silk mix (I am totally guessing here) looks really nice. I tried it in an above the ankle length, and I really like it.. 

מעבר למחזור של הבדים, שתי השמלות נעשו על טהרת התפירה העלית (טוב, כמעט. על כך בפוסטים הבאים). אחרי שהבנתי איך אני רוצה שהגזרה תראה, גזרתי קודם את הבטנה (זו השכבה הפנימית יותר של הבטנה, שנקאת באנגלית - underlining, והיא נתפרת כשכבה אחת עם הבד החיצוני) ואז את הבד. השכבה הפנימית נותנת חוזק ותמיכה לבגד, ובמקרה של השמלה הירוקה גם משחק גוונים מעניין. שמלת הבורדו היתה אמורה להיות דגם נסיוני, אבל היא נראתה כ"כ טוב שזכתה לקיום משל עצמה. לירוקה הוספתי גם בטנת סאטן נעימה, שגם היא, תאמינו או לא נעשתה מסדינים ישנים שהבאתי מאותו הטיול בהודו. אני לא מאמינה שפעם ישנתי בתוך סדיני סאטן ירוקים. בטח חשבתי שאני מהרג'ה.

This was actually the first version of the pattern, and how I envisioned Joan would look standing. Later I found a detailed image of that dress and it turns out it is actually a wrap dress, with a bit of sarong type skirt. I am making it too (found an even more precise fabric while visiting my old closet, in a form of a Tibetan dress. I really can't believe I actually wore stuff like that once. I was a total hippy.)

הירוקה עשויה ממשי בגוון אמרלד , והבורגונדי - אני לא יודעת מה זה הבד הזה, אבל הוא נראה כמו תערבות בין משי פראי לבין פשתן או כותנה. מרקם מעניין, ראו למטה. עשיתי כמה שינוים עיצוביים בין הגזרות, שהעיקריים בהן הן האורך (תגידו, קוראות אופנתיות שכמוכן, מה אתן אומרות על אורך מעל לקרסול? ) ומיקום הרוכסן. 

Here it is with a vintage brooch. I tried it on with a red rose, it also looks cool, more Spanish in nature..:) The couture insides look like this. The dress is not lined, but it's fine, I think many times underlining is enough. There will be a detailed post on that soon. 

שני הרוכסנים נתמכים מבפנים ע"י החברים האלה, איך קוראים להם בעברית? וו ועין? (גוגל טרנסלייטור הבוגדני). בגלל שהשמלה צמודה למדי בחלק העליון, הרוכסנים עובדים קצת כמו מחוך (עדין ביותר) ומחזיקים צורה.

 I made a side invisible zipper for the burgundy dress, since it's very fitted there is a waist stay and some hook and eyes to help the zipper. For the green on I used a cotton hook and eye tape I cut and sewn behind the lapped zipper in the back. All the seams are overclocked and catch-stitched to the underlining to help them lay flat. 

A few tips I have to share from this challenge:

1. Be creative and resourceful! If you don't have the right fabric, don't run and buy it, maybe it's hiding in your own closet. The satisfaction is beyond imagination and these old clothes will thank you (seen "toy story"?) and so will the environment.

2. Don't be afraid to make your own patterns. Study the design elements, think how do you imagine the pattern would look like and use your sloper or an old pattern that fits well to experiment flat pattern making. Use a muslin and a mannequin to drape if you prefer it.

3. Try underlining instead of lining. The process is faster - both layers are sewn at the same time and it's easier to adapt the size in case you loose or add some inches to your figure.

4. Sew flat! For the same two reasons - it saves time and you can easily alter the side seams if you'll ever need to. Plus it's easier!

5. It's very hard to take pictures on your own. 

כמה דברים שהיתי רוצה לחלוק איתכן בעקבות הפרויקט הזה:

1. היו יצירתיות ולא צרכניות! אם אין לכן את הבד המתאים, אל תרוצו לקנות, בדקו אולי הוא נמצא בחלק האחורי של ארונכן. עקבו אחרי לוחות הפינטרסט שלי כדי לקבל רעיונות מגניבים לDIY ומחזורים.

2. אל תפחדנה לעשות גזרות משלכן. בסכ"ה מדובר בחתיכת נייר שאמורה אח"כ ליצור צורה תלת מימדית בבד. אם יש לכן גזרה שמתאימה לכן, או שיש לכן ספר שמלמד איך להוציא גזרה- אתן חופשיות להתנסות ולשחק באוות נפשכן. אני מתכננת לכתוב בהמשך על כל מיני דרכים מגניבות להוציא גזרה ויש הרבה:)

3. חשבו יעיל. נסו לתפור בטנה פנימית במקום חיצונית (ראו את הנקודה הזו באנגלית אם זה לא ברור). הדבר חוסך מלא זמן ומאפשר תיקונים מהירים למידה בשלב מאוחר יותר.

4. אל תקשיבו להוראות. מרבית הספרים ילמדו אתכן לתפור קודם את החלק העליון כולו ואז לחבר אותו במותן לחלק התחתון. אני מציעה לכן לנסות לחבר חלק קדמי לאחורי- באמצעות תפרים צדדיים. הדבר חוסך זמן, קל יותר ומאפשר לשנות את המידה של השמלה בקלות, אם אתן כמוני- ומתרחבות או מצרות בהקפים מדי עונה.

5. מאוד קשה להצטלם לבד. 

Thank you Julia Bobbin for making this challenge yet another year:)! Mad Men is my most favorite show (at least fashion wise) and almost all Joan's dresses have to be recreated (especially those in promos..)  So - many more Mad Men challenges to come, hopefully!

טוב, אז נאמר שלום לעת עתה. מקווה שנהניתן (אני יודעת שהקוראות העבריות שלי אכן קוראות את מה שאני כותבת, וזה מאוד מחמם את ליבי), ומי שחדש/ה מוזמן להצטרף לקוראים, אני מנסה לאסוף כאן שבט קטן, בכל זאת.

בעלי נמצא עכשיו בLA, עם הסרט המקסים שלו, אז למי שיש קרובים שם, אולי הם יצליחו לתפוס אותו. הסרט מסיים את הסיבוב שלו בתי הקולנוע בארץ (אני יודעת שלא פרסמתי פה, לא יודעת למה, לפעמים לא נראה לי נכון לערבב את החיים האישיים שלנו פה, אולי זה טעות) אז אם הוא עדיין רץ במקום מסוים, ואתם רוצים לדעת לאיזה בן אדם אני נשואה, חפשו את "איגור ומסע העגורים", של יבגני רומן.

בנתיים שלחתי אותו אתמול למסע קניות בסדקיות הלוס אנג'לסיות, שלמרות המבחר הרב, אולי תשמחו לשמוע שהן נראות ומרגישות כמו אלנבי שלנו. ככה שלא כל דשה של כל שכן ירוק יותר:)

My "Emerald Green Dress" is In Jade! :) שמלת "האמרלד" שלי היא בצבע ירקן

Just a quick post to let you know about my progress. I finished the dress- on the outside, still have the lining, facings and hemming to do. Sorry for the dark-ish photos, that's all the romantic lighting we have at home.. The process was lots of fun, very creatively freeing so to speak. Pattern making is so much fun, much more appealing to me than following a ready pattern.. Some people are just bad at following orders..:) 

Thanks to Zoe from So, Zo, What Do You Know I now know that the tone of green I am using for this version is called Jade and what do you know - it is also from a jewel family. I love jewel tones, on me or in my apartment  and after having made a little research I came to a conclusion that a. these are the most flattering tones for brunettes, b. these colors hug the female curves in a most seducing way (that is my re-framing for the usual "slimming" verb, which I in my opinion is a part of a misogynistic discourse)  , and c. they work best with the clean line designs I love most.

So having found out this Jade too is a jewel tone, I now feel less guilty for not making it in emerald  (I ran out of fabric I was planning for. actually, not true I didn't buy enough. one of those rare moments of trying to save.. never works for me.) In this cotton version I decided to let go of the fishtail godet, it was too stiff, and left a nice back slit. 

But enough with the spoilers! Have a great week and I'll "see" you soon. Don't be surprised to see another post from me during the day, I have a few drafts laying around, which I think reached their time to see the world.

פוסט מהיר, רק לעדכן אתכן על בהתקדמותי. סיימתי את השמלה "מבחוץ", נשאר עדיין לטפל בבטנה, עיבודים ומכפלות. (מצטערת על התמונות הקצת כהות, זו כל התאורה הרומנטית שיש לנו בבית ..)

התהליך הפעם היה ממש כיפי, יצירתי ומשחרר. למרות שיש לי אוסף נאה של גזרות מוכנות בבית, אני תמיד נהנית יותר להתחיל מרעיון ו"ליצוק" אותו לחומר, מאשר לעבוד על גזרה מוכנה הדרשת מעקב אחר הוראות בלבד. אבל זו אני.. לטוב ולרע.

הודות לזואי, מ-So, Zo, What Do You Know, אני יודעת עכשיו שהטון של ירוק שאני השתמשתי לגרסה זו נקרא באנגלית ג'ייד (ירקן בעברית) ואתן יודעות מה, גם הוא שייך למשפחת צבעי אבני החן (aka jewel tones). מצאתי שאלו הם הצבעים שאני באופן טבעי נמשכת אליהם הכי הרבה ו"הפתעה גדולה" הם גם המחמיאים לי ביותר. מחקירה קטנה של הנושא גיליתי שמדובר בצבעים שטובים עם הברונטיות, הנראות הכי טוב עטופות בגווני אבני חן.. אני אוהבת את הרעיון , אתן בטח יכולות להבין.גם אמרלד הוא צבע של אבן חן שבעברית נקראת - ברקת, והיא יקרה אף יותר מיהלום.

מעבר להטבה עם הברונטיות, מדובר בצבעים המחמיאים ביותר לגוף הנשי ולקימוריו (אם את אישה עם היקפים נדיבים ואינך רוצה להסתתר עד סוף ימי חייך מאחורי שחור, תעשי חיפוש מהיר לjewel tones בגוגל ולכי לבחור לך שמלה באחד מהם). 

ומעבר להכול, הצבעים האלה פשוט נראים הכי טוב עם העיצוב הנקי שאני אוהבת. 

בקיצור עכשיו אני מרגישה קצת יותר טוב עם הבחירה של הבד, שהחליף ברגע האחרון את ירוק הברקת, אשר הסתבר כי לוקה בחסר בערך במטר.. (כן, קצת כעסתי על עצמי אפשר להגיד.. קניתי מעט מדי בד באחת הפעמים הבודדות האלה שהחלטתי להיות חסכנית. אף פעם לא עבד בשבילי) בגרסת הכותנה הזו החלטתי בסוף לוותר על הגודה- זנב הדג החמוד, כי הוא היה קצת נוקשה מדי, והשארתי שסע נדיב. אבל מספיק עם ספוילרים! שבוע טוב ואני "אראה" אתכן בקרוב. אל תבהלו אם פתאום תראו עוד פוסט ממני במהלך היום, יש לי כמה דברים כמעט מוכנים במגירה שהגיע זמנם.

The Dress Inspector - Jil Sander's Emerald Green Dress

I was sick for a few days, with a fever and a nasty cough, so I was not able to do much, cognitively et cetera. So what does a person do when sick on a weekend? Catch up on the first season of "Girls", for starters. I have to shamefully admit that I enjoy this show just a little too much for my age.. like ten years older than the characters.. I don't even wanna think what that means.. The other thing is of course sewing. But what can a girl do when she's too sick to sew? Well, what else but to seek inspiration webwise. So I'd like to introduce you to my new blog's game- it's called the dress inspector, or "I spot an invisible zipper". I did want to be Sherlock Holmes when I grew up.

היתי חולה כמה ימים, עם חום, שיעול וחוסר יכולת לתפקד, קוגניטיבית ובכלל. בהתחשב בעובדה שאני צריכה לעשות בערך הכול ואתמול, זו היתה מכה קשה. אך מה בכל זאת עושה אדם חולה בסוף שבוע? משלים את פעריו התרבותיים בצפיה בעונה הראשונה של "גירלס" האמריקאית (אני מתביישת להודות שאני נהנית קצת יותר מדי מהסדרה, בכל זאת בערך עשור מפריד ביני לבין גיבורותיה.. אני אפילו לא רוצה להתחיל לחשוב מה זה אומר). הדבר השני הוא כמובן תפירה. אבל מה עושים אם חולים מדי בשביל לתפור? מחפשים השראת תפירה באינטרנט! :) אני רוצה להציג בפני כן נושא חדש בבלוג - הנקרא- the dress inspector, או "אני מזהה רוכסן נסתר". תמיד רציתי להיות שרלוק הולמס.

So, question number one is- do you recognize this emerald green dress? One point for you if you got that one right!  This is Jil Sander, actually designed for the brand by Raf Simons, in 2012. Raf got standing ovations for his last collection for Sander's, and this one is from a season before. His career is definitely one to delve into, if you are into this kind of thing, readers.

The way to play this game is to inspect this dress thoroughly- and try to guess as many design and construction features as possible. Before we begin- here are some of the dress details from the ready to wear site-

איך משחקים את המשחק הזה? אנחנו בוחנות את שמלה לעומק ומזהות את כל הפרטים העיצוביים שלה. לפני שנתחיל- הנה מה שהאתר מספר לנו עליה:

שמלה ירוקה, מחויטת, מויסקוזת קובס (?? אולי ויסקוזה וקנבס?). רוכסן אחורי. בטנה מלאה. הסיכות נמכרות בנפרד. 1115$...

So, what do I spot? 

1. I spot a loose kimono sleeve, without underarm gussets.

2. I spot two high front bodice darts, no bust darts, and a center seam.

 No such seam in the skirt.

3. I spot two front skirt darts covered with detachable brooches.

1. שרוול קימונו רופף (שרוול המחובר לחלק הקדמי ללא תפר)

2. שני מתפרים גבוהים ותפר אמצעי (שאינו חוזר על עצמו בחצאית) 

3. שני מתפרים מקבילים בחצאית - החיבורים לחלק העליון מקושטים בסיכות ניתנות להסרה

4. I spot a very deep V opening in the back and a low invisible zipper.

5. I spot two back skirt darts and some unclear situation at the bodice back. What are these? Darts? Pleats? I think one dart or pleat is imitating the V.

6. I spot a very high open slit.

5. 4 מתפרים בחצאית ומצב לא ברור בחלק העליון.. - מה זה נראה לכם?

מתפרים? פנסים? שני מתפרים.

6. אני מזהה שסע גבוה מאוד ששוב מקושט בסיכה 

I actually love the dress's front and hate it's back. I am going to make this dress just for the kicks of it, but I am changing the back- to a more shallow V, and the back slit-  to a godet, for a full retro mood. I find something a little less elegant in a back that has asks to show three parts of your body simultaneously.  Too much is always too much, don't you think? Also this dress was clearly designed for women who don't fight gravitation with their breasts (perhaps like Anna Del Russo). It might be an un-modest statement, but I think I can make this dress work better than Anna, a woman that always makes me wanna hug and feed her porridge.

למעשה אני מאוד אוהבת את החלק הקדמי של השמלה ודי שונאת את האחורי. לדעתי אחד מאלו היה מספיק- פתח גב עמוק או שסע גבוה. השמלה כמובן נועדה במקור לנשים עם חזה מאוד קטן שלא צריכות תמיכה כנגד כוח המשיכה (אולי כמו אנה דל רוסו). אולי זה לא צנוע, אבל אני חושבת שאני אעשה יותר צדק לשמלה הזו מהאישה הזו, שכל פעם שאני רואה אותה בא לי לחבק ולהאכיל אותה בדייסה.

ואם נחזור לשמלה- יש משהו ב"פתוח מדי" הזה מאחור שהוא אנטי אלגנטי בעיני, מעניין אם תסכימו. אולי זה יותר מדי מהכול? גם גב עמוק, שיורד מתחת למותן, וגם שסע גבוהה.. חייבים לוותר על חלק מזה. לכן בגזרה שאני הכנתי- פתח גב עדיין יהיה עם V עמוק אך לא עד הטוסיק, ובמקום השסע אני אשים- גודה. זה משולש בד כזה שמכניסים לתוך השסע - והוא מציץ בפלרטטנות כשאת הולכת, כמו זנב קטן, שומר על הצורה הצמודה של החצאית ועדיין מאפשר תנועה. כיוון שאני לא מבינה את המטרה בפנסים בגב, אני הולכת לעשות רק שני מתפרים אחוריים ושניים מקבילים להם בחצאית.

The main charm of this dress, besides the color, is the V neck and the kimono sleeve combo, and the air in the shoulders as opposed to the slim silhouette of the skirt. The other issue is the length  this is very vintage- about 15 cm below the knee, but there is something really appealing in it for me.

Now the real question and it is always an issue- is how is the lining made? Does the dress have facings you think? Is the lining stitched to the sleeve's hem by machine or is it free flowing like in the skirt..? 

Lets play this game and I will show you in my next posts how to easily change your existing patterns to achieve this look. 

הקסם האמיתי של השמלה הזו, מעבר לצבע העשיר (ירוק אמרלד שולתתת!!) הוא בפתח V הקדמי והשילוב שלו עם השרוולים הנופלים, והניגוד בין זה לבין הסילואט הצר של החצאית. גם האורך הוא מאוד מיוחד- שימו לב, בערך 15 ש"מ מתחת לברך, מאוד וינטאז' - שנות ה50 (ינספיירד) ומעניין מאוד בעיני. 

האורך הזה גם שלט בשנות ה30, אך החצאית דאז אופיינו בגזרה מתרחבת מעט למטה ודגש על מותניים צרות, ההפך מהפיפטיז, וגם ההפך מהמותניים שלי. :)

עכשיו השאלה האמיתית היא איך השמלה הזו מורכבת? מה קורה עם הבטנה? יש רצועות עיבוד פנימיות? הבטנה תפורה לשרוולים או חופשיה כמו המכפלת למטה?

בואו לשחק את המשחק הזה איתי ואני אראה לכן איך אפשר לעשות את הגזרה הזו בקלות,

ולהשיג את המראה מבלי להוציא 1115$. אאוצ'

P.s. I have also stumbled upon this version, that I can't really get the appeal of. Both are sold on the same site, and have minor differences, such as the price (1449 $ - what? ) material (Green silk, cotton and wool ) and the back V depth, which is a bit more humane. But jeez, what's with the loose fit? Doesn't it just look like a terrible size mistake?

נ.ב. נתקלתי גם בגרסה הזו של השמלה, באותו אתר, שאני לא ממש מצליחה להבין את המשיכה שבה. ההבדלים הם במחיר (1449$ - מה?) , בבד (משי ירוק, כותנה וצמר) ובאורך הפתח בגב, שהופך לקצת יותר הומאני. אבל אלוהים - מה קרה לגזרה? זה נראה קצת כמו טעות חמורה בבחירת המידה, לא?

A Quiet Night In With the Purple Wiggle Dress - ורק קולה של מכונת התפירה

What can be better than spending a cold winter night at home, your loved ones close, and you are quietly sewing in a room (of your own:), accompanied by the cat , the dog and a new favorite sewing book? Let me tell you, there are no too many simple pleasures like that. I am grateful.. 

In this post I am working on the purple wiggle dress, from Gertie's book, this time with the boat neckline, and in a purple wool Georgette (from a local fabric store).

Gertie's New Book For Better Sewing

The eyes should always rest on something pleasant , don't you think? This is a little vintage sewing box I brought back from Paris. I found it at this really cool flee market we visited. (Take a look at this link if you are planning a trip there). The box came with a few vintage buttons, I followed the tradition and now keep all my buttons and closures in this box. In the ex Max Brenner boxes (that remind me that "Chocolate is good for you":)) I keep thread and other sewing notions

אני חושבת שחשוב שהעיניים תמיד ינוחו על משהו נעים, לא ככה?  זו קופסת תפירה ישנה שהבאתי איתי מפאריז. מצאתי אותה באחד משווקי הפשפשים המגניבים שלהם, שאת שמו אנני לא זוכרת ברגע זה, אבל זה אחד מאלו כאן. היא הגיעה עם כמה כפתורי וינטאז', אני שומרת על המסורת ועכשיו  מחזיקה בה את כל הכפתורים שלי ועוד כל מיני וסוגרים ושטויות. בקופסאות של מקס ברנר לשעבר (שמזכירות לי ש"שוקולד טוב בשבילי ":)) אני שומרת את החוטים ודברי תפירה אחרים.

It's nice to do the same garment again, you already have the pattern, so once the fabric is prewashed and pressed, you can just go ahead and cut. 

נחמד לעשות את אותו הבגד שוב, הגזרה כבר בדוקה ומוכנה, וכל מה שנראר- אם הבד כבר מוכן , הוא לגזור.. לגזור ולסמן.

I made my darts straight forward, don't know why the pattern wanted the legs to be in an angle.. I  figured, they'd better off like that. Has anyone noticed that too? Why is that? 

המתפרים. בגזרה של הספר הקו האמצעי שלהם הולך קצת באלכסון.. לא הבנתי למה ולכן ביטלתי את זה.  אני עוברת שוב על הסימונים עם גיר, כדי להיות בטוחה שלא ימחקו. המתפרים האם הטריק שגורם לגזרה הדו מימדית להפוך לתלת מימדית ולעקוב אחר קוי הגוף. לי יש סיפור אהבה איתם. המשחק בהם, יחד עם בחירת הבד, הוא לב ליבו של העיצוב. כמעט לא נראה אותם יותר בבגדי מעצבים העשוים מטריקו נמתח, ובעיני זה חבל. הגוף הנשי זקוק להגדרה ותחימה, זה עושה לו טוב, וטוב יותר חשוב מנוח, לדעתי.

For more accurate sewing I mark my seam lines. This is a piece of cake since the double wheel and I are together.

לתפירה יותר מדויקת אני מסמנת גם את קוי התפר שלי. הזכרתי בעבר כי חלק מהגזרות, לרוב האמריקאיות, ואלו מהשנים האחרונות, כוללות קצווה קבועה של 5/8 אינצ', או 1.5 ס"מ של שוליים. יש שתי אסכולות בעולם התפירה, אפשר לומר שאחת היא הדרך הישנה, שבאה ממסורת של תפירת קוטור הארופאית, והיא אומרת לסמן את קוי התפר תמיד (גזרות שלא כוללות שוליים); והשניה היא החדשה, שבאה מתוך היצור ההמוני, ונהוגה בארה"ב, ובה גוזרים ישר עם הקצוות, לא מסמנים את קוי התפר ותופרים באופן הכי מדויק שאפשר לפי הסימון שמופיע על מכונת התפירה. זה חוסך זמן, ונפוץ יותר בקהילת התפירה, שחלק מחבריה אף נוהגים להתלונן על גזרות מסוג של בורדה שאינן כוללות קצוות. אך אני רגילה וגם מאז שהגלגלת הכפולה ואני ביחד, המשימה הזו הפכה לפשוטה ביותר.

This is my lesson learned from the wiggle dress number one, - stabilize the neckline seams with something stable right away. I am using here some silk organza salvages.

זה השיעור שלי מהשמלה האדומה . לחזק ישר שגוזרים את פתח הצוואר- ולא מספיק רק בתפר, צריך משהו ממש יציב, כמו שולי אורגזנה משי. (אורגנזה משי שונה מאורגנזה פוליאסטר)

This is my method of attaching the organza to the underarm gussets opening. I don't transfer the lines to the right side, just pin the organza to the bottom (right side of fabric), stitching lines facing me. I then stitch following the lines on this side. This id Gertie's post on gussets, for those who wanna give this pattern a try.

זו השיטה שלי עם חיזוק הטלאים בבית השחי (תראו את הפרט הזה בהרבה גזרות וינטאז' עם שרוולי קימונו צמודים). הדבר הזה נועד על מנת לחזק את התפרים בבית השחי, שאחרת- ללא קצוות עשוים להפרם. למי /שזה מעניין אותה  מוזמנת להציץ בפוסט של גרטי.

The dress is finished minus the lining. I already wore it out, but decided to line it anyway. Gertie does not elaborate on the lining in this project, (I suppose since she underlined it instead..? ) I was a bit discouraged with making the gussets again in the lining, and tried to figure another solution out. I'll see what I can dig up from my sewing books..

השמלה גמורה, חוץ מהבטנה. כבר לבשתי אותה פעם אחת.., אך החלטתי שבכל זאת צריך. גרטי לא מפרטת על החלק הזה בספר, וזה היה ממש חסר לי. חיפשתי לשווא בספריי- איך עושים בטנה לשרוולי קימוני עם טלאים. זאת כי לא נראה לי הגיוניי לעשות שוב את כל התהליך עם האורגנזה רק בשביל בטנה, למרות שאחת מקוראות הבלוג שלי, בחורה רצינית במיוחד, אמרה שזה מה שעושים.. אני עדיין מקווה לעצה ממישהו, אולי אפילו מגרטי עצמה.. אז אם יש למישהי רעיון,אשמח לשמוע:).
