It's been a few months since I saw Vertigo again, and started writing this post. We saw it again together, my better half and me, in our new- old movies nights tradition. And as old as it may sound, we both came to the conclusion, they don't make them as they used to.. (Just think of the last Oscar's. How could they give an Oscar to Jenifer Lowrence, with all do respect, and not give it to Emmanuelle Riva for her role in Amour, on her 86 birthday, and looking so fabulous? You know? And also the movies, aren't as great)
למעשה עברו כבר כמה חודשים, או לפחות שבועות (מי סופר?) מאז שראיתי את ורטיגו שוב, והתחלתי לכתוב את הפוסט הזה. ראינו אותו ביחד, החצי השני שלי ואנוכי, במסורת החדשה שלנו של ערבי קולנוע ישן. ועל אף הסכנה של להשמע זקנה, שנינו הגענו למסקנה שלא עושים סרטים ברמה כזו יותר (רק תחשבו על האוסקר האחרון. איך אפשר היה לתת פסלון לג'ניפר לורנס, כבודה במקומה מונח על תפקיד רגיל בסרט חמוד, ולא לתת לאמנואל ריבה, מ"אהבה", ביומולדת ה86 שלה? היא גם התלבשה אגב הרבה יותר מוצלח מלורנס. מבית לנוון)
The first time I actually saw Hitchcock's Vertigo was in college in one of my favorite general courses- Gender in Cinema. We talked about the subtext of it, a male who is not able to live and love a real flesh and blood woman (with dark hair) and is drawn, tragically for all, to an ideal version, a blond, mysterious and unattainable vamp. My poor husband had to listen to the full analysis throughout the movie:)
הפעם הראשונה שראיתי את ורטיגו של היצ'קוק היתה בתואר הראשון שלי, באחד הקורסים הכלליים הכי מגניבים, גברים ונשים בקולנוע (גם באנגלית, גם בקולנוע וגם במגדר.. מה עוד צריך?). דיברנו על הסאבטקסט של הסרט, על הגבר שאינו מסוגל לחיות עם אישה אמיתית, בשר ודם (כהת השיער) ונמשך באופן טראגי לכולם לדמות הבלונדינית האידיאלית והחמקמקה, שהוא עמו יוצר. בן זוגי המסכן היה צריך לשמוע את הניתוח המלא לאורך הסרט :)
Well it became even more interesting now with the HBO's new movie about Hitchcock's relationship with Tippi Hedren (the star in Birds and Marnie), and the new biography, staring Antony Hopkins and Helen Mirren as Hitch's wife. These were a bit superficial (the HBO one being a plain demonisation of one of all times greatest directors), but they gave an idea about the passions and the conflicts of a the man behind the movies. They say Vertigo was about his own inner conflicts. Isn't it always, though?
לאחרונה העניין הפך לעוד יותר מעניין עם היציאה של סדרת הHBO החדשה על היחסים של היצ'קוק עם טיפי הדרן (הגיבורה בציפורים ומרני), והביוגרפיה החדשה בכיכובם של אנטוני הופקינס והלן מירן בתפקיד אישתו). שניהם נראו לנו קצת שטחיים (כשהסרט של HBO עשה ממש דמוניזציה לאחד מהבמאים הגדולים של כל הזמנים), אבל הם נתנו רעיון לגבי התשוקות והקונפליקטים שהניעו את האיש שמאחורי המצלמה. אומרים שורטיגו עסק בדרמות הפנימיות של היצ'קוק עצמו (אבל האין זה תמיד ככה?)

Hitchcock loved choosing and literally "shaping" his actresses. He would get involved in every aspect of their appearance on and off the set, creating a new "bigger than life" image, helping them to play their roles even more convincingly and ultimately making his actresses into stars, at least for the time being. And as Pygmalion, he would create them and then fall in love with them. All that, while having a wonderful relationship with an intelligent and supporting wife.. but perhaps a dash too real..? I have always been on the real side myself, although I must admit to enjoy an occasional mind game. Adding a little drama to life is not such a bad idea, especially if it's a fun one.
היצ'קוק אהב לבחור ואז ממש לעצב את השחקניות שלו. הוא הפך למעורב בכל אספקט של המראה שלהן, בסט ומחוצה לו, עזר להן לשחק את תפקידן יותר טוב, וביוצרו דמות חדשה ו"גדולה מהחיים" הפך אותן לכוכבות, לפחות לזמן מה. וכמו פיגמליון, הוא יצר והתאהב בנושא יצירתו. כל זה בזמן שלצידו היתה אישה נבונה ותומכת ביותר, אבל אולי.. טיפה אמיתית מדי..?
אני עצמי תמיד היתי בצד האמיתי, אך זה לא אומר שאני לא נהנית ממשחקי מוח פעם ב.. להוסיף קצת דרמה לחיים זה אף פעם לא רע, במוחד אם מדובר בדרמה קלילה.
Since I saw Vertigo the first time, I have been fascinated with that movie. There is something about it, the colors, the music, (the story).. that touches you at a subconscious level, and you can't quiet explain it, but you are hooked.
And this time I watched it with my new designer eye. And oh my, the outfits.. The style.. the makeup. I wanted to sew everything Kim Novak was wearing. Hitchcock was a brilliant director, and some of that brilliance was his attention to details and a great fashion sense (he chose and approved all of his actresses clothes, sometimes with the help of his wife.)
מאז שראיתי את ורטיגו בפעם הראושונה נשביתי בסרט הזה. אני לא יודעת לשים על זה את האצבע, אבל יש משהו בסרט הזה, הצבעים, המוזיקה (הסיפור) שנוגע בך ברמה הבלתי מודעת ואינו מרפה.
והפעם צפיתי בו גם עם עיני העיצוב החדשות שלי. תמיד היתי ערה לפן האסטטי של החיים אבל עכשיו כשאני רואה בגדים - אני מפרקת אותם לגורמים. והתלבושות בורטיגו.. איזה עונג לעניים! הסגנון (אני מסרבת להשתמש במילה סטיילינג, שעושה לי רע) והאיפור.. אלוהים. רציתי לתפור את כל מה שקים נובאק לבשה..
היצ'קוק היה במאי מבריק וחלק מכישרונו התבטא בתשומת הלב שלו לפרטים, וחוש ויזואלי ואופני מעולה. (הוא בחר וקבע את כל התלבושות של הדמויות בעצמו, לעתים בעזרת אישתו, שלרוב הסכימה איתו)
Kim Novak played a mentally disturbed woman in the movie, and later in life was diagnosed as a bipolar herself. How creepy, or one might say Hitchcocky, is that? The e- rational female that is both scary and incredibly attractive to the male is a known cinematic theme, but also one common in life (met it?)
Vertigo also touches the male desire to save the female, when in fact, he is the one who needs saving.
קים נובאק משחקת דמות מופרעת נפשית, והסיפור היותר מוזר הוא שהיא באמת פיתחה הפרעה בי פולרית בהמשך החיים (מאניה דפרסיה במילים אחרות). קצת קריפי, לא? מתאים להיצ'קוק.
האישה האי רציונאלית, שבו זמנית מפחידה אך גם מושכת את הגבר, היא מוטיב קולנועי ידוע, אך גם אחד שחוזר על עצמו בחיים (מכירות אולי?). ורטיגו גם נוגע במשאלה של הגבר להציל את האישה, כשלמעשה זה הוא עצמו שזקוק לעזרה.
In any case, we'll be hearing an talking a lot about Hitchcock soon. There have already been fashion collection inspired by his Femme Fatale characters (see Alice Temperley, Vivian Westwood or my personal favorite - Badgley Mischka), and it does make a perfect sense thinking about our recent obsession with the past in general, and the middle of the last century in particular.
בכל מקרה, אנחנו הולכים לשמוע הרבה בקשר להיצ'קוק בזמן הקרוב. כבר היו כמה קולקציות שעוצבו בהשראת דימוי הפאם פאטאל שבסרטיו (ראו את Alice Temperley או Vivian Westwood או החביבים עלי Badgley Mischka), וזה אכן מתכתב עם האובססיה האחרונה שלנו עם המאה הקודמת בכלל והאמצע שלה במיוחד.
Interestingly enough, traditionally the Femme Fatale would be a dark haired woman, the blond representing innocence and purity, and the brunet the forbidden desires and the dark & evil side of womanhood. Hitchcock turned that around. If you have a naughty side in you, after watching the next video clip I embedded for you, you'll now want to dye your hair blond too. Man, and that after finally having our brunet moment!
מעניין כי באופן מסורתי, הפאם פאטאל היתה ברונטית, כאשר דווקא הבלונדינית יצגה את הטוהר והתמימות, הדמות כהת השיער סימלה את התשוקות האסורות והצד האפל של הנשי. היצ'קוק הפך את היוצרות. אם יש לכן איזה חלק שובב בתוככן, כשתראו את הסרטון ששתלתי בהמשך, גם אתן תרצו עכשיו לצבוע את השיער לבלונדיני. איזה באסה, כל כך נהניתי משבע דקות התהילה של הברונטיות! היה לנו רגע, תודו.
